Cochins and laying?

My little cochin was my first to lay. She was so uncharacteristically GOOD at laying that I started to question if someone else had started laying and I just didn't realize it. She laid 42 eggs in the first 49 days, then she went broody on me over Thanksgiving because I wasn't here to kick her out of the nest box.

Now, after 17 days, I just got my first egg from her again! Yippee!!!

Anyway, what I think I'm trying to say is that if you can keep them from going broody on you, they are just fine layers... at least mine is. All three are laying great through the winter. I provide extra light to equal 12 hours of daylight per day and when all 3 are healthy I'm getting 2-3 eggs per day.

Well thats good. Mine are laying awesomely right now. It seems the colder it gets the better and i dont have a light on them. The other day it never got over 40 degrees and i got 7 eggs from 9 hens and the next day I got 5 then 6. And today it was warmer around the 70s and i got 5 eggs. just thought i would ask, I was worried they would only lay this good when its cold. Thanks:D

I know this is a very old thread! Wanted to comment on Cochins...since this was our first winter with them. Cochins are known for laying more in the winter. We did not have to use lights or heat in our coop here in Minnesota...even with temps dropping down to 50 below 0. I used one red heat lamp for the times below 0 but otherwise nothing. They were outside just about every day so usually the light went off during the day, Once they reached laying age of 6 months, they increased production to laying consistently 7-8 eggs a day. I have 10 hens. They have just recently slowed down... in March. I suspect they are slowing for the spring/summer months. I cannot wait for next winter again :)
