Hi Friends—My broody raised two adorable Cochins who are now about 8 weeks old. I’m no expert, but I’m thinking they are cockerels. Can the Cochin experts chime in and help me?

Usually Cochin males at 8 weeks have substantially larger combs. The pinkness is a bit concerning, but I had a precocious Cochin gal whose comb was pink but small, and very much female.

You will know for certain by 12 weeks as male combs will double in size.

We have cochins as well. They both look to be pullets to me. They are both walking close to the ground which is a girl thing. You can look at the length of the wing feathers to give you an idea. If the wing tips reach the butt area, they are girls. The boys have substatially shorter, smaller wings. You will also see classic Rooster behavior to include stare downs, mock fighting and upright gait. They will also instinctively look at the sky for predators. Very pretty.

Most of this only pertains to day old and very young chicks. Wing sexing doesn't work on cochins at all... Nor the pin feather/tail growth thing.
