Cochins vs Orphingtons

I currently have a cochin rooster and an orpington rooster and an almost 2 year old :p. My cochin rooster, I have zero problems with, and he's honestly kind of a big wuss, haha. My orpington rooster on the other hand isn't aggressive but he will stand his ground. I have to really watch my toddler when he gets around the orpington roo because it makes me a little nervous. We have decided on only keeping the cochin roo mainly because of his gentle behavior and the Orp. roo is going to become dinner sometime soon ;'(
Thank you for that information! I feel when you have kids around it's best not to gamble. When he is older I can expect him to understand and respect a rooster, but he doesn't understand that now and has a love for chickens that I want to encourage! I don't want to have to watch every move or have him stay away!

I am looking into getting rid of my aggressive rooster and replacing it with a Jubilee Orpington Rooster or a Cochin rooster? Can anyone speak to the roosters of these two breeds? I'd like a protector of the flock but my 18 month old grandson loves my chickens but I can't and don't trust my current rooster around him.

I've had both Orpington and Cochin roosters and either one will likely do fine with your grandson as both are calm and gentle breeds (of course there can always be an exception with any breed). My children made lap pets of both our Orpingtons and our Cochins. Whichever breed you decide to get, good luck with your rooster.

I'd go with buff orps. They are so friendly and affectionate. Their eggs are large and they lay almost every day. They are cold hardy and do great in confinement. Cochins are great too! They don't lay as many eggs but make wonderful pets!

I'm pretty new at this and I have 6 week old chicks....

which include a black Cochin and a Splash english Orpington.

They are both super calm and friendly. My Cochin however is wildly calm. She is so laid back and quiet. She's also the only one to not poo on me yet so she's won favorite in my flock haha

Also my orpington is super chatty- not sure if that's common for the breed or I just lucked out? haha

No problem! That's just coming from the rooster perspective, I guess you could say, lol. I also have a cochin hen and buff orpington hen and they are both good, quiet, sweet chickens. My son loves the chickens too, and sometimes the hens will sit there long enough to let him give them a few pets on the back. :)
