Cockerel Not Crowing At 12.5 Weeks ???

If he has, it has not been a full blown crow, and not at all frequently. He is 12 and a 1/2 weeks old, and I guess I thought he'd be crowing by now. Is this normal, or abnormal, or does it really vary between roos?

And probably another subject, but our chicks never really went through a work-out-the-pecking-order phase. Is this typical??? Maybe Mr. Incredible (cockerel's name) hasn't realized yet that he's a rooster?

Crowing just depends on the bird they start anywhere from 5 weeks to 5 months. Im waiting too for my 11 wk olds. As for the pecking order i dunno hopefully someone with more experience will help.

My Araucana just started to crow at 26 weeks....don't really know if that's typical or not. It's just how long it took with my bird.

Crowing varies between roos, my latest cockerel just started crowing at 9 weeks, however I've had them start crowing as early as 3 weeks, as well as one that started in his mid teens (weeks, not months/years). The 3 weeker started out with a weird wolfish crow in the middle of the night (scared the dickens out of me it did).

I don't really remember when the late crower started - I just remember that my roosters then starting taking shifts at around 2:30/3:30 in the morning. Oddly we also cut off the baby monitor to the chicken house at that same time.

BTW I highly advocate separate housing for extra roos.

My RIRs didn't start crowing until around 4 months or so.

On the pecking-order thing...they probably have it all worked out, and you just don't know it. I never knew who was in charge in my hen house....that is, until I added in the newbies this year! I figured out real quick that it was one of my EE hens! She has since been seperated with a buddy so the 16-week olds can sleep in the hen house, and not outside!!

Eight months?

I kinda hope Mr. Incredible starts sooner. I was at our county fair yesterday, and all the 4-h cockerels were taking turns crowing. Hey...maybe I could sneak him in and let him listen... Maybe they'd teach him!

Some take longer than others to start crowing. It all depends on the rooster. Not crowing at 12.5 weeks is normal! He'll start crowing when he's ready!
