My buff Orpington cockerel will be 16 weeks next week. He has not yet begun to crow.
The past week or so he has been acting much more fresh biting at my shoes and ankles. When he does so I pick him up and hold him till he settles down.
He was of course very sweeet prior to this.
My question is will he settle down once his hormones level out a bit?

I had to cull my last rooster because he became very aggressive attacking me, my husband, and some of the hens.

I choose this bread since I heard they were very docile, I’m really hoping not to have to do the same with this rooster.

I have 11 hens and he is in the new group of 5 pullets but they are all pretty much integrated at this point

Im no expert, but have been reading it can take a whole year or even

Ł more to settle down. Cockerels who are brought up by a broody within a flock seem to do better than hand raised roosters. Be firm with roosters. Never trust young roosters with little children.

In general a rooster wants to provide his hens with food. Don’t make the mistake to give food to the hens and ignore the rooster. Put the plate in front of the rooster. He will call his girls and distribute the food.

There are a few good articles in the learning center about roosters. @Shadrach wrote one or two. Shouldn’t be hard to find.

Personally, I want a rooster to give me 5 feet. Not to panic, but just step away respecting my space.

Having older hens in there tends to help, get better roosters, kind of sort of.

Truthfully, time will tell. Keep an eye on him, and make him move off would be my advice. Do not little children in there with him.
