Oh no! Well, I have some dog pee pads, so I will line their crate with that now. Thank you all!

The only reason chicks have a beak (aka a pecker) is to explore their world. They do this by pecking at and tasting everything in their surroundings. The things that they find pleasing they eat. The things that they find displeasing they reject.Mine pecked at the pine shavings a bit, but I did not see them eating them.
Just so you know, this thread is from 2013! That's a great question that you should probably make your own thread about, if you want answered.I have always used puppy pads for 2-3 days till they are eating good then switch to fine shavings (which are still pretty big IMO). I have never had a problem with it. Unfortunately this time I wasn't paying attention and bought extra fine and didn't realize it till I poured them in. I immediately covered them with the puppy pads again. Should I take them up and replace?
Duh thanks - I'm 67 and so bad at this...Just so you know, this thread is from 2013! That's a great question that you should probably make your own thread about, if you want answered.

If this were not so you could not raise incubator chicks because they would soon starve or die from thirst. Yes, some chicks may inadvertently eat a fragment or two of a pine tree but I doubt they will consume much. At any rate, the reason that a chickens' digestive system is so vastly different from our own is because chickens are able to eat everything that we do and so much more.

sherrybrown had posted something earlier today, but I think it may have been deleted.123,
Was anyone asking about chicks eating shavings?
Was the original posting an imaginary problem?
