We had a nice overcast day, just right for taking pictures.

This is Mr. M. He is at least four years old. He had a magnificent train last year but he did not get to mate, he got to free range all summer.
I don't think he had those colored feathers on his shoulders last year. Is this a sign of split to Black Shoulder?

Four of my Cameo hens and Limpy the IB Pied, probable mother to Prince, father Pied Piper.

Mr. M and the girls. The Cameo hens stick together.

Left to right, Carmelo, all Cameo hens are named Carmelo, Mr. White Eyes, Mr. M., and Mr. Whites sister Betty.

Mr. M. showing off his hump.

Elvis, the daddy of most of my chicks this year. At least four yo, IBBS/ Cameo, got his hump going on too.

Rocky and Carmelo, both 2012 hatch, I have a question about Rocky, he is split to either White or Pied. Can it be determined which?

This will be his first 'Big Boy' train.

Elvis again.

Big Daddy got some hump too. 2011 hatch and breeder in IB pen. does this Cameo hen look to show anything?
I am looking for either Pied or BS in one of my Cameos.

Bottom to top, NewBoy , Freckles, both 2013 hatch, and Pied Piper.

Freckles showing off his spots.

Mama and her girls.

This is just to cool off your eyes, view off our back deck this evening.

Beautiful peas and photos of them are wonderful.
MR.M looks to have black shouldered in his background with that dark dusting o his shoulder and Rocky is a pied looking bird that white on the belly and leggs are a for sure sign IMO has he had a train before? i am wondering if there were any white eyes in his train?

Thank you! I was hoping that Rockys white on the belly would mean Pied but I didn't know if that were the case. He didn't have one eye feather last year, this will be his third year train this year. He is already showing a few eye feathers but I don't see any white on them yet. Another newbee question; do white eye feathers show white from the get go or do they come in white later in the development?

Mr. Magnificent didn't get the nod last year for top breeder but it wasn't because of the colored feathers on his shoulders. Big Daddy got the go ahead mainly because of size and the wide green area on his back. Mr. M. had the better tail but I felt that Big Daddy had the overall better color.

Speaking of back color, did you notice how broad and ultra green the feathers on Rockys back are? The black shoulders really makes it stand out but the area is wider on him than the rest of my cocks.

My white eyed pied gets more white eyes every year he is going to be 4 after his next breeding season and his last train over half his feathers were white eyes so i am learning about that as i go. Notice your boy also has white on his feet and leggs

For me ... Rocky is a Black shoulder pied ... not a split pied !
His pants and belly have white feather .... IB Black shoulder have a black pants.

Terminology is important, I knew better, I will try to be more careful in the future. Thanks for your input!

He does have white pants and legs but I didn't know if that was an indicator of white or pied, now I do (?), and the white on his chest I was hoping was an indicator of Pied so it's all good news. Looks like he also has some more white coming on his tail. I really like that big broad area of bright green on his back.

Do you have any white hens to put with Rocky? He sure is beautiful

We bought three White chicks this year but I really have no idea what sex they are yet. One is much bigger than the other two but one of the smaller ones has the wispy feathers at the base of the tail like the larger one does. I don't know how accurate that is but those are the only differences I can see. I have not been thinking of breeding Rocky as I haven't really had the time to evaluate him, that is, when I see white eyes in his tail I may want to go a different direction. Or I might want to buy a white hen for him.

Isn't it fun to watch how they develop?

Oh, I got my new brooder done! Just have to add the outside runs now....
