My favorite way to introduce new birds to the coop is to take all the birds out, clean the coop, add the new birds before the old birds. The old birds are confused and it takes them a while to catch on that they are in their environs. This method works particularly well if you have several new birds to add -- more is better -- as the numbers flummox the previous flock even more.

I have been wondering how to put my 16 chicks in with my older hens.

The chicks are the same size as my hens.

I have been trying to take one of the older hens in with me when I'm out working in the coop and they tend to run the chicks away from them.

My ratio now is 6 to 16.
