I have the same thing going on in my coop. Several of my hens will be down on the floor scratching around and when the rooster enters, they book it for the roost bars.So a week ago I set 18 eggs in the incubator. I checked them and all but 2 are developing. The 2 eggs that did not develop are from the same hen (all my eggs are a different color and size). Had this same issue last year from the same hen. Though this year I have a different rooster but the same result. After observing recent behaviors and last year I have come to this conclusion: my hen avoids being mated. Soon as she sees him coming her way, she makes a run for it.
My rooster takes his time too when he does this hen.. not the other ones. Only reason I'm bummed because I want her babies but oh well.I have the same thing going on in my coop. Granted Trubel isn't the best 'lover'. He tends to lose his balance a lot and work at work at getting the job done and from what I've seen never really succeeds.
He's such a good flock leader and I'm not in the market for any of his progeny at the moment. I'm planning on moving him out after I harvest Fayoumi eggs for my incubator along with any young roosters/bantams, and move Tut in as flock leader. That Fayoumis rooster is a super bird. His only fault is that he will not fight with the other roosters in order to keep control of the hens. His attitude is like, you want em? You can have em, I ain't gettin killed over them. Which is pretty common in the Fayoumis.
Frankly I want only Fayoumis roosters for that matter. I'm tired of the Game bird cross Amish barnyard birds blinding and maiming one another and want more peaceful roosters in my flock.
