Morning all. Three mugs of coffee down. Of course it's decaf but hey, reminds me of the real thing.

Still no rain here. We need it bad. Big cracks in the ground and everything is brown and drooping.

Virtually no apple or pear crop this year. Trees were full of blooms and early fruit but when the heat and dry hit the trees dropped the excess fruit. We may get enough apples for our own use but we usually share with our neighbors and it bothers me that we won't be able to this year.

@pennyJo1960 I remember years ago hearing somebody on a news 'plant' advice segment that if your grass goes brown, don't water it. It isn't dead. Grass will go dormant when the available rain drops off and stay dormant until it gets enough water to green up. Generally it won't die. So resist funneling $$$$ to the water company.

When I started living rural I learned to embrace crab grass. It resists drought and hey, it's green! Plus the chickens love it. They got spoiled this summer. I gave them the last water melon I grew last week. It was only about 7 inches across but they loved it and keep going back to the empty rind like they are checking to see if more melon has appeared. Guess it's time to toss out the rinds and break the bad news that they have to wait till next summer for more.
