Coffee's ready...

Morning people,
Looks like we are in for a warm spell here, upper 70's to low 80's. Working on the wood pile the next couple of days. I have a nice large red oak lined up for next year I have to make room for.

With all this talk of eggs, sounds like that's what for breakfast, scramble eggs, cheese, hot sauce all rolled up in flat breads......

Enjoy your day
Kaj

Good morning chicken wranglers,
Q, Take an aspirin , or a ibuprofen and relax Then go out and butcher the chickens that will not lay! Congrats on the eggs rngr. I finally got the woman talked into flying to Fla. and this goofy thing at O'hare had to happen now it is back to square one oh bother.
If it is not one thing it is another.
God Bless!

Most hens will remain broody for at least 3 weeks - the normal incubation period of chicken eggs. Some if in poor condition, mite infested, bothered by other chickens or predators will stop setting prior to that. Many will set far in excess of the normal 21 day period - some times to the point of debilitation unles 'broken' of their broodiness. Hope this is what you wanted, rngr.

Lol
This reminds me of the meat ducks I got this summer.... Now they all have names ( beck, page, Lilly , Lea and Lois...) they will not be butchered. Oh well I suppose I will eat eggs and next years offspring will hit the freezer instead... I hope. I don't get it I can kill other peoples birds, but I can't even bring myself to do the ancient chickens. I was hoping for an excess of roos so I'd have to butcher but all but one chick is a hen, oh and the little Roo got named too so he can stick around and make me purebred buff Orpington's. :idunno

Bill, so far our's have only been about a week if I've taken them off the nest about 10 times per day. If you want to break it, you could try a broody breaker cage, or some icepacks in the nest to cool them down.

My wood shop and our home are 100% solar powered.

In your sig, clicking website takes me to etsy. clicking etsy takes me to FB (as does clicking FB)

How'd the solar power work out? Whenever I've tried looking into it, the cost to set it up is way too much to get a return on investment, but we have very low electric rates- averaging around 3 to 4 cents per kwh.

Thanks for letting me know about the links.... They are fixed.

As far as the solar, we love it. We still have to pay a "membership" fee because we are still on the grid. In less then a years time we have put in excess just under 1000kw. Come winter time, I'll use a lot of that up with the electric heat in the shop and house. Our biggest part of the electric bill are all the additional fees and taxes that were eliminated with the solar. Basically we went from a $100 - $120 monthly bill to a $20 monthly bill. The value of the house goes up, but they can't raise your property taxes. We also have solar thermal for our hot water. We have a backup oil heater that is turned off in March and turned back on in November. It use to heat the water for us, but mostly to keep the house warm when we aren't around or at night when I don't want to stoke the fire. Last year we used about 230 gallons of oil.
So to answer your question (still awake?), yes for us, it is working out.
