I just mowed the lawn for hopefully the last time this year. It's 0C (32F) outside. Also raked up some more maple leaves and spread them as mulch for the plum tree. Added some raw compost and grass clippings, and hopefully that will decompose slowly around it in spring. The chickens decided to help a bit too.

Not supposed to get another hard frost until sometime next week - suppose it will soon be necessary to harvest the remaining tomatoes. As it is right now, I have been bringing a couple inside each day to ripen on the windowsill. Jammed a stick into the corner of my left eye yesterday, and it is now a bloodshot mess - no apparent corneal damage, and vision is not impacted.

Morning People

We had our second hard frost last night. It took out the beans. I wasn't watching and never covered them. I wonder what pre-frozen beans are like......

@sourland - take care of yourself, I hope OSHA doesn't make people wear safety glasses picking tomatoes.....

I broke down and purchased a re-curve crossbow. It came in the mail yesterday. Any one have one or used one?

Kaj, I prefer normal bows, I have a nice longbow. The crossbows are pretty easy to use though, and give quite a wicked bolt velocity. A regular arrow will carry more punch with a lower speed though, due to the higher mass caused by the longer length. We had a guy come to the indoor bow range with a 160 lb crossbow, they let him fire it once to see how powerful it was, after it went through the foot thick mattress, and into the wall, they forbid him from using it there.

I was never a cross bow enthusiast. I used a recurve, bare bow. Back in my hunting days, I 'd do a week long hunt by myself & sleep in the back of the van. 2 days out, drove to a close small town to call home and check in. I felt the van run over something when I got back to the camp area. Yup. I had leaned the bow on the front of the van, and snapped it in two. The wife was sure shocked when I climbed in bed with her a couple hours later.

That was also not a good idea. I really hate it when I break something out of carelessness. It's okay if it breaks during use, but if it's broken because I screwed up, I get mad at myself.

Well the garlic is in. Now to wait for that frost to cover it with hay. Too I've got to keep those chickens out.

Lately I've been keeping them in the run, due to that fox. Not seen hide nor hair of it lately though.

I've been mowing and dumping the leaves/cuttings in the beds getting ready for spring. My allergy med is no match for the dust of working in the garden. A mask just fogs up my glasses.

So much to do so little time.
