Went and put 'grave blankets' on the Princess's parents and Grandmothers' graves. Last year we were up to our knees in snow in doing so - this year no problem. Stopped at European Provisions on the way back and bought some kielbasa, stuffed cabbage, chicken/barley soup and cruschikkis (sp). Good stuff for sure.

What are "grave blankets"?

DW makes Gwumpkis, not sure how to spell it. She'll be making Piorogie for Christmas eve dinner. She also makes Kepusta/Kapusta? Made with sour kraut and yellow peas. Very bland and I no longer eat it since her Aunt and Uncle passed on. Straight Polish they were.

We don't eat Kielbasa. They had a tradition for Christmas eve dinner. We try to adhere but not always.

Grave blankets are flat 'wreath-like arrangements of pine branches and bows' - not a concept from my heritage. Christmas celebration includes pierogies, kielbasa, bobka, etc - the house will smell like my MIL's used to. That lady was a GOOD cook.

Ranger, funny that you should mention cookies. The Princess is making some dough that has to be refrigerated overnight, and then tomorrow we start baking cookies.

Well now Kapusta doesn't smell very good. Cabbage and yellow peas? ick. Fried fish? okay and it's a nice dinner.

Of course when DW bakes it's pretty good.

Hungarian 'refrigerator' cookies are done. Started on 'Grandma Wallace's' lemon raisin cookies and the Princess found that she is missing tartar powder - what that does? So she is off to town on a Sat. just before Christmas -

If the 'me' of 50 + years ago could see the 'me' of today helping with cookies and having fun at it, he would shake his head, open another Bud, and say "Boy, whatever happened to you?"

I'm happy with the new 'me' and the Princess is HAPPY.

Felix, I 'took over' the kitchen 22 years ago. In my next life I am going to be a chef/own a restaurant.
