Coffee's ready...

Good morning chicken wranglers,
I think that old man winter just layed an egg on my head! 5 inches of snow and teen temps. We go into the minus factor tonight. Then 10 days below the freezing mark, Hop-e I make it through all this cold. The cattle are doing okay and the hens are still laying . I do need to get fresh straw in the coop for the ol girls.
Thinking of spring only causes me anxiety right now .
The old adage come to mind right now: As a rule mans a fool when it's hot he wants it cool when it's cool he wants it hot ,Always wanting what it's not!
God Bless!

Morning People,
Yesterday was a different day for us.....The museum was closed, I never thought of looking at the "open days" just the time. I guess we never went on a Monday. So we took a nice slow meandering ride home. They have a exhibition on the passenger pigeons we'd like to see. Maybe a trip back up there today......... On another note, one the ride back we stopped at a "antique center". More like a giant indoor yard sale. But I scored big time. Something to drive the better half nuts. Another santa claus mug. It's funny, during the holidays, everyone looks for them now. I guess they have become part of the holiday decorations.....

On to a warmer subject, spring planning. We are still looking to replenish our egg layers with either pullets or chicks. As far as the meaties, I am going to try something new to me. Besides the cornish x, I am going to try the rangers. Get them at the same time, but process at different times.
Also I saw something different in our travels this summer. Someone had squashes going from bagged dirt. It looked like they split the bag open and planted the squashes. Leaving the bag still around the dirt. I have one spot I would like to try this and let the vines go.
I was going to start looking for seed catalogs this week. Get back into being overwhelmed by seed and plant catalogs. Don't you wish you could opt out on companies selling your mailing address?

Pancakes and ham for supper tonight......

Hello @chickychickens welcome

Enjoy your day

Rancher,

Just read: ". I loaded up my beds with compost" how does DW feel about that? Mine gets upset if I take my nap with my shoes on.

I'm not allowed in the house with shoes on... So I go bare feet most of the time.

Hello Karl good to see you back

Hey there, Karl and Kaj. The better half's parents did salads out of soil bags last summer, that worked really nicely too. And we grew beans and peas in soil filled garbage bags, that worked really well too.

We're not thinking about meaties, but instead we're going to try bringing up a litter or two of rabbits. Should be pretty low maintenance.

It is crunchy snow, hand hurting, birds mobbing the feeders kind of cold today, and I hate it.

OK I'm done whining. There are others with REAL problems. Think I'll just have another cup of coffee.

Not me I like it hot. I figure I can always take off more clothes to get cool, but I can't afford to heat this house. DW is usually hot, but since she got sick she's been cold so the heat is up.

I've seen this bag things done in magazines. I've been getting seed catalogs for a while now.

When I worked for the PO I used tell people to order all the catalogs they could so we had work. I do order but also figure I can use them to start fires in the fire pit. Gotta keep those mail people working you know.

As rule now some companies don't send out catalogs unless you request them year to year. Bakers Creek has a big variety of seeds so I get to try different varieties of things like tomatoes, squash and other things. Somethings don't work and some do.

I just learned Vadalia onions don't grow here.

You can whine all you want as far as I'm concerned, if it makes you feel better. I can sympathize. I hate the cold too.

Morning People,
It's a bit chilly here this morning. I woke up to about 15f. I guess I'll be burning locust for a bit. I had a incident happen to me when I was about 14/15 years old. It sort of taught me what cold can be.I was crossing a creek in the winter and I broke through the ice. After what seemed like forever I managed to get out of the creek. I was wet head to toe. I had about a 100 yd run home and by the time I got there everything was frozen. My neighbor saw me struggling to get into my house, came to help. Every Tom, Dick and Harry had the hots for her. Being a 14/15 year old but head punk, I was so far out of her league. Anyways, she gets me in the shower with my clothes on and turns the cold water on. I thought she was trying to kill me. The water burned so bad. The savings grace, I was able to boast that I had a "shower" with her.

Here's another funny story, I was about 7/8 years old. A buddy and myself where skating on a pond/swamp. We came across this like bubble in the ice. In the bubble was a small minnow. Yep, so we had to get that minnow. Why? don't know. So we proceed to take the heal of our skates and start chipping away. Yep, after awhile kerplunk, into the water we go. Yep, we got into trouble for running home with our skates on.

The better half's parents did salads out of soil bags last summer, that worked really nicely too. And we grew beans and peas in soil filled garbage bags, that worked really well too.

We'll still be using the raised beds for the majority of veggies. I am glad people are getting good results with the bags. I am hoping they'll work in the back garden. As for those potato towers, yep trying those.
I use to raise rabbits, besides hunting them a long long time ago. They are low maintenance, easier to process then chickens. We have a area where the chickens can "free range". Cuts down on the feed etc.

I better stop with this rambling and get to work.

Enjoy your day

Kaj
