Morning People,

We were eating kale and collard greens right from the garden, up till mid December. This last cold snap did everything in. I dried the kale, beans (first time this year) and have/did dried the carrots. I usually freeze the beans, but thought to try something different. I would say, I dried 1/3 of this years carrots harvest because of storage limitations. As far as the actual name of the veggies at this time I couldn't tell you.

Quote: The better half loves blueberries. Alot of times you'll find her out there grazin on them. They are easy to freeze. Blueberry sauce for pancakes, crisp, mixed with other canned/frozen fruits etc. Yep, froze the corn to.

I guess trial and error and how much we enjoy something.

I am always changing/adjusting the gardens. This spring, 2 more raised beds and potato towers. The old main in ground garden is just going to be a bed of vine veggis, cucumbers, butternut, acorn etc. The tomato bed, I am doing with out those yellow pear shaped tomatoes and planting more plum for sauce. I can never have to much sauce. We also had ( to me ) a couple of comfort meals, tomato soup ( yep with heavy cream ) and grilled cheeses...........

Enjoy the day

Good morning chicken wranglers,
We have 3 barn cats that are offspring of the one kitten we found abandoned and nursed until grown.
Now she "the momma is in the shop (one step closer to gone and we have a kitten or hers in the house. He tore up the carpet and crapped in the basement so he is on his way out also. I myself have no great love for cats other than the purposeful one of them as mousers. The mother cleaned the barn out of mice but eventually found her way back to the house. She is a sweet cat but took to peeing in the floor registers on a regular basis so she had to go. If she would have stayed in the barn she could have lived her days in harmonious bliss killing mice and making me happy. I would just as soon shoot a feral as try to tame it. I caught one in a live trap I set for what I thought was a coon killing my hens, as it turned out when she was gone the killing of hens also stopped. Cats have their place but they can be a nuisance .
God Bless!

Morning people,'
Woke up to snow this morning, blustery winds. Just enough to make it white out there.

I secure the use of our neighbors animals in keeping pests away. I am always throwing scrapes of fat and bones for their dogs and cats to come and visit. There has been a drastic decline in chipmunks, squirrels and mice. Part of the problems with me, is my better half. She loves her birds and feeds them. I would find the sunflower seeds stashed all over in the shop. This is the first year I haven't found any. I also feed the crows when they are around, bread and such.

Enjoy the day,
Kaj

I bought seed from Burpee. We like the Italian Ice tomatoes, but the yellow pear were not good. Skin was hard and taste not good. Unless you're talking about a bigger yellow. I grew a Yellow Boy or something like that and it wasn't very good either.

Now the Black Cherokee tomatoes are very good. If you like tomatoes off the vine these are excellent.

I did stick some yellow tomatoes in with my red to can but then learned Yellow don't have enough acid. I've seen to add some vinegar to canned tomatoes but never have. I don't plan to grow yellows anymore.

Heirloom tomatoes sell for a lot here. I do try to grow a few. Hopefully this year I can put more into it.

Poor Stubby, he was a Manx I got off the mail root. He had spine problems and would just poop or pee where he slept. I had DD take him to the vets and had him put to sleep. I had already done Merlin months before. Puff was 22-23 I paid $3 for her off the mail route. She got hit by a car. All in the same year. It was a bad year for cats here and I haven't had one since.

Any how you might check his spine. Perhaps there is something wrong.

I do hope all your cats are fixed. The shelters are full up here. You have to get on a waiting list if you want to give one up. The CNY cat coalition works with Pet Smart to adopt. They always have lots of cats. They helped with Skinny Pete years ago. He was a stray and is long gone.

I don't mind cats, but am just to old to deal with them and chickens. Cats are very expensive maintenance. Cat feed is way more than chicken and they've never laid anything worth keeping.

'Sides, I can set traps to dispose of mice. BAM! dead as door nail. I toss them outside the back door and something comes and eats them. Not the chickens. They can't get to where I dump them. I think perhaps a possum.

I thought we were the only ones who did that.

People used to think we were crazy. Well we are but in a fun way.

If there is a dish rag or wash cloth I think should go I just toss it w/out telling her. I don't know why she saves her thread bare towels but she does.

Thread bare towels, Oh my! Cotton and poly blend. Cotton soft and absorbent, poly smooth and strong and not absorbent. Cotton wares away leaving the smooth poly. feels nice, looks well friendly, but does not absorb water. Something in the female psyche just can't understand this and shirt, pants and chairs becoming comfortable.

I have the most disreputable looking blue jeans in the world - faded, abraded, pocket edges and fly worn and scruffy, bottoms worn off and 'stringy', yep even a few holes, but they conform to my body - they are comfortable - why should they go? I'll never understand women and clothing.
