Coffee's ready...

Yes, GC's are Gold Comets. We have 30 of them ranging in age from about 6 months (the Youngsters) to about 20 months (the Older Gals). We started keeping chickens last year in April with our first 6 started pullets from Shooks Poultry, then 6 more in July, 7 in September, and another 11 this past May. For egg layers I don't think you can do better. They lay extra large brown eggs and we've always gotten nearly 100% production from our Gals since the beginning. Even in the winter we were getting 15 to 18 eggs every day. Our record so far has been 25 with the Youngsters coming on line but we have the original 6 in molt at the moment. I assume once they're through that we'll be back up to 27 to 30 eggs a day. I sell every egg we get for $3/dz to neighbors and my co-workers who somehow have been led to believe in the medicinal healing properties of organic fresh eggs from free-ranging hens. City folk will believe anything...

Hmmmm... where is everyone? Is everyone on vacation? We've not heard from Laura for a long time. Plenty of others, too, that are MIA!! Oh well, I'm on my second cup (slept late) and finally waking up. Should be a super day and plan on taking a walk at a state forest. We finally got some rain. It seemed like a lot but I was digging in the run yesterday and saw that it only went down about 2". So it was probably just enough to get the grass growing again. I'll be mowing by week's end. Did some preventative maintenance with lice/mite powder. I don't want to experience that again. My hens seem so much happier when they are allowed to free-range and I've noticed a difference with egg quality, too. The shells are thicker when free-ranged. Well my poultry friends, enjoy the coffee!

Greetings Everyone! Welcome all you newcomers!

I just got back (2:00 am) from rafting through the Grand Canyon - it was so totally awesome! I have never in my life seen anything so awe inspiring - and such beautiful rocks. I am totally interested in rocks now. And who needs a roller coaster - sitting in the front of a rubber raft going over rapids - one a 30 foot drop, classified as the only waterfall on the Colorado - is as exhilarating as it comes. I can't believe the extremes in the desert - from 111 degrees to 50. The water was freezing - you wished for the sun. In two minutes you were baked and wished for the water. I have never been in the desert before (incredible flowers), and I wondered how one could raise chickens. I visited a school friend in Las Vegas whom I hadn't seen in forty years. She took me about, but nary a chicken did I see - they are probably underground somewhere trying to find cool. Tonapah - I have such respect for your chicken raising abilities in such extreme circumstances.

Meanwhile back here, there has been no rain. In spite of that, I have peas, zucchini, beets and carrots to pick. My peach tree is almost to the ground laden with fruit - and I pruned three out of four peaches from it before I left. And, of course, in between everything are lots of weeds. There is nothing like going away to make you appreciate home.

Must mow what little lawn I have - it looks like a prairie.

I've finished the coffee - time to get to work.

Good morning chicken wrangleras
Sounds as if you had the time of your life kismet! I have been to the bottom of the canyon only once and that was over twenty years ago.
My trip to the nieghbors farm too drop oiff the heffers for breeding could never compair to such magnificance.
I went back to check on the girls the next day and they remebered the bucket of cracked corn . It i s ironic to me because moonshine is the dominant barn yard matron but now these little bitty dexters push her around because they have horns and she is polled.I ran the dexters off so my girls could eat in peace and liney my other cow, dropped eating to chase the bull!
I think it is love!So much for amour.Ya'll have a great day! God Bless!

I missed coffee today. We cut down three trees yesterday. This morning, at the first signs of daylight, I started a fire and started burning the trees. It took 3 steady hours of piling and burning before MOST of the trees were on the fire. There are a few twigs here and there left to pick up tomorrow.

After that; I came inside, cleaned up and had lunch. Absolutely, no time for coffee this morning.

No Broodies at my chicken household ! ! !

Morning People,
Fresh pot of India Monsoon Malabar is ready to go. Looks like a chance of rain today, and we could use it. It's been very dry this summer.

Good morning poultry people! Thanks for saving me some coffee. I'm ready for a secong cup now.
Sissy, how many of your hens do you think are broody? They sure aren't paying for their room and board! I don't have any broodies right now. The last one quit a couple of weeks ago. Out of 12 laying hens I get about 6-7 eggs per day. I give the cats the smallest ones to try to save money on cat food. When I put cat food and eggs side by side they all go for the eggs first!

Then they pick at the cat food. Have a good one everybody!
