Cold here in NH

Its been snowing all day and 13 degrees here in the Hudson Valley region of NY. Just came in from trying to get two of our emus into their shelter. They will not go! Found them this morning covered in snow and shivering. One keeps picking her foot up as if it's cold. Our other two emus have spent the entire day cuddled up in their separate shelter. I'm headed out to give it another shot but am really worried about them if they choose to stay out in the snow all night.

Good luck getting them in, I hate worrying about them all night. El goes right to the horse barn every night but Ed I have to put one hand on his chest and one on his rump and kind of run him in LOL!

Ellamumu- where in NH are you? I lived there most of my life in the lakes region before moving a few years back.

No luck with the two emus getting in their shelter. They have hunkered down under a tree that they are partial to, I put some extra straw down but will worry all night for sure.

I'm in the lakes region Ossipee to be exact and we are cold, tonight were getting 12 to 18 inches but the temp has come up to about 10 degrees so thats a lot better than last night

Finally a 30 degree day, my emu sons have been so unhappy with the single digits temps the last week and a half, they haven't ventured out of the horse barn at all. They jump up joyously everyday and then when I open the barn doors they take a quick peek, scoff at the weather and head back to bed. Today they are running around in the sun. I maybe crazy but I swear they look at me and say mom where is our clover and swimming pool, do something about this!

Back into the single digits, and tomorrow night is supposed to be -12 . My barn is completely closed and the mus are bedded deep in hay but they are not happy! Anyone else dealing with this? I have a small electric heater that I turn on if I'm right there and the poor things are standing in front of it letting it blow on their chests, but I can't leave it unattended ,too dangerous in a barn !

I def. would not use that heater but you know that !
Why not just get some of the 250 watt heat lamp bulbs and the reflectors for them ( be sure to get the ones with the porcelain sockets that can handle up to 250 watts ) and hang above them, the red ones work best it seems and should be fine IF you have ample ceiling height.

The lights are helping somewhat it was -20 at 2am outside but the barn was staying at a balmy 3 degrees. Every time I checked on them last night they were warm under their feathers and they weren't shivering so I guess they're pretty tough.

sounds like your area is more suited for raising penguins than emus! Stay warm!
