I bought one of my hens in as she was hunched and very lethargic. I gave her mineral drink and done the usual health checks, I can’t seem to find anything wrong. She picks up when warm but seems to deteriorate when she goes back out, it’s been a week of fetching her in and out. How long is it ok to keep her in and out of the flock. I’m worried about the extreme temperatures when she goes back out. Any suggestions?

Shoot, I live in CA. I have very little experience with extreme cold. And I'm a sucker for chickens. I'd bring her in every night. But I'm crazy.

Maybe she's just spoiled by the comfy warm people coop. Lol!

It seems odd that the cold seems to affect her. I wonder if something else is going on. Has she lost weight? Eating and drinking ok? How's her poop? Everything normal? No signs of frostbite or anything on comb and wattles?

She has good weight, poop a bit watery. Eating ok. I’m baffled, but i only have three hens left so determined to keep her going. Thanks

Three of them have a small coop inside a shed , we live high on a hill so it possible could do with a bit more insulation. The others seem ok, but I think she’s the bottom of the pecking order so she might be getting shoved out.
Relieved she’s so much better today but is It ok to keep her in, at least until the springtime.

Have a fecal float test performed on her feces to see if she has parasites. Check your coop for air quality-does it stink? Most healthy chickens can handle cold weather if they are provided a well ventilated, draft free coop. However, bantam breeds do not do well in extreme cold and require added heat. Birds who are carrying a disease or infection will not do well in bad weather.

Can you get some photos of her poop?
Where are you located in the world?
How old is she and does she lay eggs?
What do you feed?

Feel her abdomen for bloat/fluid and make sure her crop is emptying overnight.
Look for lice/mites too.

When you say she might be getting shoved out - what do you mean? Out of the coop, not getting to food/water, etc.?

She may be having some reproductive issues, it would be hard to know. It can be hard on birds taking them in/out of warm places. I understand why you are bringing her in for supportive care but is there room to offer care outside so she doesn't have to re-acclimate to temperature changes so much.
