cold weather & quail

can young quail take cold weather? they say it might get to 28 nhere next week 1 day. the birds are 7 weeks.

My husband laughed at me when I put the heat lamp on our quail a few nights here. We got down to 27 one night. They all seemed fine, but I felt sorry for them. They huddled under each heat lamp happily. Mine are all adults though.

If they're well fed and have access to warm water at all times, they will be fine. That is, if they are in a place with no drafts. You might try putting a cardboard box in their pen with part of one side cut out. They will huddle under that at night, and their collective body heat will keep them warm. It's been -15 here several nights and mine are just fine in a calf hut without heat.

Just watch out for anyone sparatically molting. I lost about 5 adult quail that molted soon after I placed them outdoors. At the breeders house they were in a garage that stayed fairly warm (in the 60's) and the days here were still decient (in the 50s) but the nights were much much colder and a few molted from the change in temperatures they were experiencing and died because they had no warmth to protect them. So if yousee any molting, if that was me i'd bring them back in to a warmer area until their feathers come back in. Least I will from now on... with newbie birds placed outside in cold temps without being winterized slowly.
