Cold Weather Treat! Disclosing my Secret Recipe!

Do I have the only birds that hate eggs? Pretty much not a one has ever given me other than the "you're kidding, right?" look when I've tried. They have the same reaction to oatmeal. I know I'm no Julia Child, but......
Sigh.
I wanted them to have something warm in this raw weather we're stuck in so they just gobbled up chopped up tomatoes that I heated for them. And they like warmed grain bread bits drizzled with olive oil. Once in awhile BJ roo will accept warmed butternut squash. Hen Ellie thinks he's whacked.

We were at -36 this am, without a wind chill. I made a warm mush of oatmeal, birdseed and left over popcorn for the birds. They can't wait for me to put it in the pan! They love it. It was 10 deg in their part of the barn. They are doing very well in this cold. I don't remember this kind of cold ever! Windchill yes, actual temp no. Brrr.

I have chickens that wont touch oatmeal. They look at it like Im trying to kill them. Same thing with yogurt. They do go nuts over salmon based dog kibble soaked in hot water. They will eat cottage cheese but only if its mixed into scrambled eggs.On cold days I just take their layer pellets and add hot water. Only takes a second to swell up then I add canned corn and tuna and they chow down. They have got to be the pickiest dang chickens I have ever seen. They will knock you down and beat you for string cheese but wont touch oatmeal or barley

mine love oatmeal with apples and raisins. but I have been known to throw in what ever I have leftover in the fridge, meatloaf, pumpkin, corn etc. I stock up on oatmeal when the store has it on special for $1

i am thinking you could thicken it with corn meal instead of pancake mix .. yumm to the chicken

-30F and dropping here,
mine will eat anything; they think I don't want them too. So if I push one away then they all come running in a feeding Frenzy.
Oatmeal, Salmon scraps, Rice, barley, Corn, Cinnamon Toast....whatever.....

love the eggy oatmeal pancake , you should think of a good name for it. I think I will fix that for my hens & roos for breakfast, It has been a very cold day in Mi. think it will be even colder tonight!

I don't have pancake mix, but I have added some of their crumbles into oatmeal and nuts. Their favorite seems to be the sliced almonds. Who'd have thought chickens love nuts???
