colloidal silver question with another update

Larry C. Ford, M. D. of the Department of Obstetrics and Genecology, UCLA School of Medicine, Centre For The Health Sciences reported in Nov. 1, 1988, “I tested them (the silver solutions) using standard anti-microbial tests for disinfectants. The silver solutions were anti-bacterial for concentrations of 105 organisms per ml of Streptococcus Pyogenes, Staphylococcus Aureus, Neisseria Gonorrhea, Gardnerella Vaginalis, Salmonella Typhi and other enteric pathogens, and fungicidal for Candida Albicans, Candida Globata and M. Furfur.”

The tests refer to topical applications for which silvers uses are well known for its use in bandages ... the "tests" done by the quoted author do not in any way refer to internal usage and to do so takes the text out of its original context.

Colloidal silver has been approved by the EPA as a disinfectant for hospitals and medical centers.

In August 1999 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration(FDA) issued a ruling banning colloidal silver sellers from claiming any therapeutic value for the product.

In 2002 the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration ruled that colloidal silver-containing products were no longer exempted from therapeutic goods legislation and had to meet the requirements of other products covered by this law. A TGA investigation found that "there are no current legitimate uses of colloidal silver and that the Surveillance Section of the TGA be requested to investigate the illegal availability of colloidal silver products because of concerns about their significant toxicity. The reasons for the recommendation were that:
"There is little evidence to support therapeutic claims made for colloidal silver products; the risk to consumers of silver toxicity outweighs the value of trying an unsubstantiated treatment, and bacterial resistance to silver can occur; and efforts should be made to curb the illegal availability of colloidal silver products, which is a significant public health issue."

Colloidal silver preparations are marketed on the internet as omnipotent antimicrobial agents, but scientific support for these claims is lacking. In 2004, van Hasselt, et al reported the results of in vitro tests of colloidal silver's antimicrobial activity against several pathogenic or non-pathogenic microorganisms. They took three samples of colloidal silver: one available commercially on the internet (silver concentration of 22 ppm) and two samples (concentrations of 403 and 413 ppm) which were prepared in our laboratory using standard chemical methods. Their results showed that in an agar-well diffusion assay none of the three colloidal silver solutions had any effect on the growth of the test organisms. All tested bacterial strains were sensitive to ciprofloxacin. Colloidal silver 22 ppm showed no bactericidal activity in phenol coefficient tests. Thus, they concluded that as the tested colloidal silver solutions did not show any antimicrobial effect in vitro on the microorganisms, claims of colloidal silver's antimicrobial potency are misleading and there is no place for it as an antiseptic (van Hasselt, et al, 2004).

Myoclonic status epilepticus following repeated oral ingestion of colloidal silver.

Department of Clinical Neurological Sciences, University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada.

The authors report a case of a 71-year-old man who developed myoclonic status epilepticus and coma after daily ingestion of colloidal silver for 4 months resulting in high levels of silver in plasma, erythrocytes, and CSF. Despite plasmapheresis, he remained in a persistent vegetative state until his death 5.5 months later. Silver products can cause irreversible neurologic toxicity associated with poor outcome.

As for the safetiness of CS, you would have to take a large dose of the CS to have silver poisoning. As I have said before, when taking properly and only as needed it is very safe and effective. We have the same issue with our current antibiotics. If you take them in large amounts you may succumb to death. If not taken appropriately you may develop an immunity just as you would to the antibiotic.

When you look at the reported cases of Silver poisoning you will note that they either took way too much or the product they took was not prepared properly. It needs to be pure colloidal silver. No salt or other additivies. The BYU study and the testimonials of thousands show the effectiveness. I have also only seen 2 blue people due to improperly taking the product.

I have seen first hand the effect of the CS on humans. I have also said this before, when it comes to shingles it is a life saver. I have had shingles 4 times. 3 in a 12 month period. I have seen a huge improvement in my general health because of the CS. I have used it topically on ear infections and warts with wonderful results. My DH used it on an abscessed tooth with great results.

I will also say this. I almost died due to antibiotics. I had only taken two doses of an antibiotic when I suddenly developed hives and struggled breathing. Thankfully the doctors were able to remedy the problem.

As with all things, you need to watch what you do. Too much of anything is toxic. Sometimes a little bit goes a long way.

All medicine have side effects. Just listen to the commercials for different drugs to see that. Sometimes the side effects are even worse than the initial illness to begin with. When the right product is taken properly and as needed, CS is safer than most drugs.

Thanks for listening. I will try to stay off the soap box.

This
article examines many of the claims made of 'studies' about the effectiveness and safety of silver preparations.

http://www.rosemaryjacobs.com/rose2.html

This is a well documented personal story that includes specific, referenced refutation of the 'claims' made by silver advocates - both in the medical use of it back in the day before antibiotics were available, and by current promotors of the products.

There are two sides to every story, but if you are taking silver suppliments of any kind, I urge you to read these two websites before taking any more.

If you still believe it's safe and/or effective, then that's your choice - at least if you read through this information you are making an INFORMED choice.

I am very torn! Should I give my chicken CS as a last resort??? I am loosing her and I need help.
She is small 300 grams. How much should I give her if I decided to do so? how often? just once?
She is very sick, maybe mereks? Maybe Newcastle? maybe something else.

I have the same problem with one of my silkies. I have been scouring this website and can't find out how to give it and how much? Lots of discussion but no answers....

I just wanted to say I found a study done by Assiut University on safe usage and dosage of colloidal silver:

"This study provided that, its (more than 4 ppm) harmful effect on the liver cells, especially in broilers, and recommended the use of nanosilver as anti micro-bial agent in poultry industry with caution and that the necessary conditions should be observed. Relative Organ Weight: Andi et al. (2011) Showed that silver (especially in the form of nano-particles) had negative effects on relative liver weight to live body weight. Ab-sorbed silver ions from gastrointestinal tract enter liver through the portal vein and might have impact on the liver since the liver serves as the first check- point for everything absorbed before becoming systemic. Also, they recorded bigger bursa and spleen that are contrary with investigations of Ah-madi and Kurdestani (2010)."

Here is another study on colloidal silver with chickens:

"Antibacterial and antiseptic effects of silver ion in preventing infection with coli forms, staphylococcus, and streptococcus have been proven in previous studies [2629]. Silver nanoparticles can destroy many kinds of bacteria, viruses, and fungi, and it is recommended that it can be used in the treatment of certain viral diseases in animals like Influenza and Newcastle [30]. However, extended and excessive exposure to the silver nanoparticles, like many other drugs, has side effects and pathologic effect on living tissues."

I used it in the eyes of two of my pullets, and it irritated the skin around the eyes to the point of the pullets scratching their eyes until the skin bled. I stopped after 4 days. I have ordered Tylan 50 and Terramycin eye ointment. I won't use the silver again.
