Maybe its a mood chicken like those mood rings?

Actually, you are kinda right about them being "mood chickens"... Over the past two years I've owned chickens, I've noticed that when my chickens (roos and hens both) are calm and content, they will lose most of the color in their combs, wattles, earlobes and face.. Just the opposite is also true... When they are active or upset, they will turn red again... I've also noticed that the more upset my production red roo gets, the darker his comb gets.. Sometimes it begins to turn purple.. It only happens when he feels that he and/or his flock is threatened in some way... Once the threat goes away, his comb goes back to normal...

The only time this would be a problem is if their color changed and did not return to normal...

I've noticed the same thing. I was so freaked out at first, like being a first-time mother to a child. It started out a pastel, peach color, then I could just stand there and watch as it slowly melted to red. Wierd.

It's normal though, pretty much happens to all chickens. Males will sometimes have red skin in other areas, representing that they are surging with testosterone.
