Wanted to get a discussion started about any color genes in modern chicken breeds which may derive from non-red jungle fowl- namely Grey, Ceylon/Sri Lankan, and Green jungle fowl.
Most of the time when we talk about chicken alleles that don’t fit the wild-type red jungle fowl version we label them as mutations. But how many of them might actually be inherited from other jungle fowl species? The Yellow skin gene according to research seems to be derived from grey jungle fowl and one source suggests that S (silver) may be present in that species as well.
Has anyone seen any other suggestions for genes that may come from non-red jungle fowl species?
Just looking at them, I am wondering if Ceylon jungle fowl might have Db (dark brown) and both Ceylon and Green jungle fowl hens show some kind of pseudo-autosomal barring pattern so I’m wondering if Pg (pattern gene) and Ml could be in there as well?
