Color genetics thread.

Update - the chicks are 2 weeks old now. One person suggested that the moms are silver based, and that the chicks are silver based males. Another person suggested their coloring could be because the father is wheaten colored. I wonder if they are old enough to figure out the genetics of the two chicks? Thanks.

two possible moms..... half Splash Ameraucana half Marans (variety, unsure)

dad, full blooded Wheaten Ameraucana

Chick number 1

Chick number 2

Dad, full blooded Wheaten Ameraucana (champion bloodlines)

Mother, Splash Ameraucana over splash Marans (according to person I got her from)

I watched the chicken lay the egg that this chick hatched from and labeled it with her name. I am sure, without a doubt, that the splash chicken is the mother of this chick. How is this coloring possible? The mother is genetically black with two copies of dilute, so the chick should have been blue like some that hatched from a blue hen's eggs, shouldn't it?

The hen is not pure for Extended Black pattern. Some breeders have used Black lines to improve the Silver variety. Could be that what looked like a Black, was carrying Silver, and got used in a Blue/Black/Splash line. The black pattern genes, being so dominant, could have hid the silver genes for generations.

That area is just gorgeous. I hope you're safe from all the fires.

Lucky for us it's been raining buckets the past two days with more to come over the weekend.
It didn't come soon enough for the next county over though. My parents condo burnt to the ground
along with the rest of Gatliburg so we're just thankful that none if it spread into Greenville.
Before the rain came the fields were just dry kindling.

What would I get if I bred this blue Cochin rooster with gold leakage:

With this hen who's mom was a mottled Cochin bantam and her dad was a buff brahma bantam. She has green eyes and orange around her throat.
