Color Identification Chart

I would really really really like to see a Color Identification Chart that shows you 3-4 images of variations within each chicken feather coloring. I've asked about what the names are for colors on my chickens before, but I don't think I've ever really received any responses. I think that would be a fantastic addition to the Learning Center.

Lots of stuff in the Learning Center is user-created content. We'd like to add more in the future...discussion about this is in the works.

Could you get together with some other members and create a BYC page on this topic?

I would suggest finding members who would be willing to take an up-close shot of their birds' feathers.

When it was done, we could add it to the Learning Center.

Hmm. We could do specific breeds, if color patterns are named differently from breed to breed. I think the main goal should be more trying to photograph actual colors and patterns. We could use whole bird images and close-ups of the feather patterns. It might also be helpful to list what the abbreviations are for each color. Took me a while to figure out what BBS meant.

Barred, Self and Cuckoo are good examples. See, I don't know what Exchequer is, and only today did I learn about columbian coloring.

Is anyone aware of a written list of colors and/or patterns out there somewhere?

How about this - I will take close ups and send them to you with the breed and you can decide the color. I really am no good at colors - I call things beige when they are really taupe or something.....

If we are going to put together a chart, we need to have consistency in the pictures. For instance, Each breed could have a number of pictures, but they should all be of the same areas of the chicken. Maybe all taken of a pullet aged chicken.

1 picture : full side shot of the chicken
2. picture: closeup of neck/folded wing shoulder
3. picture: tail feathers
4. picture: a specific area of the body
5. picture: unique feature of that breed (this is the only varying shot)


each breed of at least 8 months or older could have those 4 (or whatever we agree on) pictures taken at the same locations on each breed of chicken. maybe i can make a picture and put rectangles on the area for easy reference or something.

too bad i just have australorps. their color is pretty easy to determine

pictures should be of the same sex, or we could do hen/rooster combos since some might have different coloring.

what do you all think?
