Colorado

Has anyone heard anything on the chicken adoption activities at that Grant Family Farms just north of Greeley. My wife kids and I are thinking about making the treck up tomorrow. I may give them a call and make sure they are still doing this. If they are how many people around the colorado springs fountain area would like me to pick up a few for them also? You could just come tby my house, south of fountain, ,when we get back to pick them up. I would be picking up two for myself as this is all I have room for at the moment. Now I just have to find some more boxes to put them all in. We would be taking my durango, so they wouldnt get too fluffed up due to the wind.

according to their web site, The adoption was held Friday and Saturday and there is a fee to do this also. It would be $5 a hen if getting more than six hens. I am waiting for a reply to the e-mail I sent them about tomorrow. I will let you guys know.

Please keep us posted. It was my understanding they were done today, but if they are willing to give you more hens I will pitch in, as I offered before.

No, cedar can release vapors that are harmful to chicken lungs.

ugh! thats what i thought..... i wish i had thought of that when it was being put in the coop! my 4 and 6 yr old were in charge of that today..... Its mixed with some pine, pdz and DE so hopefully its not too harmful to them before i can get something else in there. Soonest i can get anything is tomorrow afternoon.

does anyone have silkies in a flock with their reg layers? Can they be in a coop together? Do the silkies need lower roosts or have different requirements then the layers? I want a silkie, but have no room....so this is just for future plans. lol

So I found this incubator for $40. The lady says she doesn't know what brand it is, here is the half-a picture I got from her. Can any one tell me what this is? Should I just buy it and risk findin out later? $40 sounds. Like a good deal for a cabinet incubator

I am no expert on cabinet incubators, so this might be the real deal, but it looks to me like a homemade incubator using a compact fridge - the racks look like refrigerator racks. That doesn't mean it won't work perfectly fine, of course, but I'd bring a thermometer and plug it in and test it. Tedious, I know - actually I would ask her to plug it in an hour before you arrive, then put your thermometer inside.

I don't right this minute but have kept large fowl and bantams together in the past with no problems.

She also said it comes with a repti pro thermometer and hydrometer. Ill have her do that and ill check it. What do you think? Would you try it if it holds temp? Or should I buy something else?

Well, for me, because I work, I am not home to turn eggs during the day, so I rely on an automatic turner. If the inner dimensions are sufficient to accommodate a turner, which you can buy separately, I think they are around $45-ish, and if there is a viewing window somewhere, I would consider it. Did she say whether there was a fan? Or is it still air? Still air usually have more hot and cold spots, but even the ones with fans will have varying temperatures. I just finished reading a discussion about incubators which suggested moving eggs around in the incubator throughout the 3 weeks so none was continuously subjected to the warmest or coldest spot.

I know there are differences between hatching reptiles and poultry, but I've never hatched reptiles so I don't really know what the differences are. Hopefully someone else will chime in with other things to consider.
