Can't keep up somedays with the posts. :)

LOL. and the urban chicken legend grows......

Were'nt they depicted on the infamous "Mayahn" calendar?
OOOH OOOH OOOH! Mayah, you could make up a chicken calendar and call it your "Mayahn" calendar..........

Use photos of your birds in their best calendar poses.....

I'll think on it today and get something for the site tomorrow.

Obviously...... a secret Mayan chicken.......

(see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1965514/ for an interesting paper on the subject of pre-columbian chickens)

I have 2 colloncas and they are a fairly old breed and the parent stock of our araucanas, americaunsas, easter eggers. In a paper I read once, they stated that silkies are somehow related to south american fowl. Chickens were common in south america but not north.

I talked to a lady at church last week who does the Farmer's Markets in Colorado Springs. She told me that she would pay me my price of $3.00 per dozen, and then take them to the Farmer's Markets in Colorado Springs where they are getting an average of $5.00 per dozen. I was floored. She said that is what she and everyone else there is charging, and they sell out each time.

Wow. I need to go there. That would supply the food for my chickens nicely just on eggs. At $3, I'm still at a loss this time of year as I only get about a dozen a day. $5 would be a break even point. Eggs in the store are getting expensive right now too.

The babies are here! I'll have some pictures later tonight

Congrats!

Hi Wendell, where exactly is the mulch pile? Do you bag it, or is it already bagged?
ETA~this question is what happens when I skip reading everything I missed and just start typing.

Ash: Black Forrest mulch will be much, much closer and on Saturdays, they have a loader. The mulch itself is free if you want to bag it yourself or $4 to have a scoopful.

FWIW
I get $5 a dozen here in Boulder from my house. I work at the Farmers Market and they sell eggs for $6 a dozen there. We have a CSA at the Farm I work at and we sell the eggs there for $5.50.

I am SOOO jealous!!!

Around here, I'm lucky to get $2.50 a dozen, and that's IF I CAN SELL ANY. Everybody wants them for free. They always have a friend or neighbor that gives them all they want.

If I'm going to give my eggs away, I'll give them to my extended family, and the community food pantry to give to those that can use them.

Oh my goodness, where are you? I agree, family and those in need if you're giving them away. Someone here gives extras to the local volunteer fire department, which I think is a great idea, I think it was Dennarahl but could be mistaken.

I posted this on our Windy Ridge site this morning......

A conversation between myself and Abraham, our rooster......
Me: So Abe, how's it going?
Abe: Dude, life is rough.....
Me: Why is that? You have plenty of food, water, a nice place to live and 17 chicks all to yourself.
Abe: Have you dealt with 17 chicks at the same time? They follow me everywhere, bicker among themselves, and expect me to support all of them in their opinions. Can you imagine what that is like?
Me: well I hadn't thought of that...
Abe: Its not all bad though...I do have 17 babes who love me.......

This morning we took delivery of a tandem load of pea gravel and 1200 sf of fabric, because Bob realized yesterday that putting a shed right on the ground might not be such a great idea if it ever rains. I ordered way more than needed under the shed so we can also build a walkway to it, as well as leaving at least a 2 foot apron around the perimeter of the shed. Still awaiting delivery of the shed kit, he was supposed to have been here yesterday afternoon but when he wasn't here by 4 I called him, and he said it would be today, and that he would call when he was leaving to bring it down. Have not heard from him yet. Worrying.

Tractor is plugged into the charger, our work area is cleared of obstacles, and once the tractor is charged Bob will level the area, then we'll put down fabric and gravel, and if we get that far by the end of tomorrow I will be thrilled. Postponed Bill's weekend home again until next weekend, which means he will be here to help with construction, and moving gravel if we haven't finished that part by then.

Set my Silkie eggs in the incubator, haven't plugged in the turner yet, I don't see any detached air cells but have been advised to wait 24-48 hours to activate the turner for shipped eggs. I'm really happy with the variety she sent, there are 6 Porcelain, 6 Lavender, 3 Buff, 3 Blue Splash, 4 White from 3 different pens, and 2 Paint. If I get even a 50% hatch considering the shipping effect I will be pleased. As long as I get some pullets, that is LOL.

I've been in contact with Greathorse about RIR eggs, he will let me know if he has enough to bring some to Denver next weekend, saves me the drive to Berthoud. I will only have room for 17 but his hens are not laying well yet so he might not have any, or might have far fewer than 17. I'll let you all know.

First week in March I will be getting 18 RIR eggs from Ron Fogle, and again will wait to see what the shipping effect is, he has very nice birds so I am hopeful but not counting on anything before it hatches.

Everything is

can adult chickens handle cedar shavings? I read somewhere that you shouldn't use cedar shavings for chicks, but don't remember adults being mentioned.

I bought a bag of softwood shavings at jax and it turned out to be cedar when its always been pine before. Should I use it in the coop or no?

No, cedar can release vapors that are harmful to chicken lungs.
