Sorry it took so long, I'm horrible at making time for pictures. So the Gambel's are mostly for eggs and pets. The coturnix will be for meat and eggs. It's just a matter of getting them breeding. We have 6 females and 2 males, then the tuxedo and the red. I know, not a whole lot to start, but we keep them inside so can't really have too many anyway. The third picture is the tuxedo and the red quail. Oh, and the last picture, we got this girl for free from CL, we were told it was a Gambel's, but we researched a little and we're pretty sure it's a California instead, just from the scaling on the belly.
I also wanted to say, I got some eggs from Dennarahl this morning, so along with 18 eggs, we have 9 quail and 5 serama eggs set tonight, wish me luck!! I'm hoping for at least one of something, lol (haven't had to much luck hatching).

They're all so pretty! Best of luck with your hatch - it's been more than 10 years since I last hatched quail eggs and I don't remember very much about them other than they are just adorable babies about the size of a golf ball

does anyone use a layer mash? Does it last longer or do you go thru it faster? Do the chickens seem to like it better? I went to a new feed store today and got a 50 lb bag of layer mash/feed, 50 lb bag of chick starter, some pine shavings which expand to 14 cu ft instead of the 8 that i get at jax for $3 less i might add, and a 40lb bag of sweet pdz for about $48...which is about $16 cheaper then i was getting it for at jax and westside feed.

Mine are all used to the larger pellets for their feed and i mixed this mash stuff in but haven't notice a preference at all.

Sure sounds like they are from Grants farm, as they too were said to be 20 -24 months old.

Yes. but I just saw one on Craigs list for $150, and i could keep it out in the chicken management area for use while working..... Of course it was used, but it could come in handy

Dont forget to tie it down somehow. I can remember when I was in the military the wind would pick up and they would blow over. Made one heck of a mess.4 pieces of rope and some long stakes goes a long ways in preventing this.

i got a special mix for my girls from the greeley feed elevator, which has to come as mash. I haven't really noticed a preference for vs pellet or crumble, but I hate it. It doesn't move through the holes in on their feed bucket very well. The only reason I got a special mix (layer w/o calcium) is so I could put the little girls out with the big girls and not worry they were getting too much calcium. The big girls have a dish for egg shells and oyster shell. I won't deal with mash again unless I have to.

Have the incubator built. Playing with the thermostat still. It's swinging from 96.9 - 103.7 right now... Gonna let it warm up for a few hours then check again.

I usually do vitamin water for chicks and add acv to adult waterers later on. Others may do it differently, but there are advantages to both ways.
