Colorado

i am hopelessly addicted to this site. i have been lurking for over a year.
chicken math...uggh. Its probably good that I'm working tomorrow so no DUH swap for me! What is it: desperation for spring?
I am looking to add show/breeder quality silkies. We started with several from NC, and all but 2 that made it into the coop have been picked off by the local fox. I think we have that problem under control now that we have electrified the fence. I want to have a fighting chance at the shows- my son picked silkies as his breed of choice, and i would like him to experience the whole showmanship thing!! Ahh... to live vicariously through him! I never had the chance!!! Silkies are tough in the CO show circuit. But we do have fun!
I would like to try my hand at breeding these girls too! Thats gonna take a few more....
Anyway... til next time!

$4.50 is a bargain for chicks you have raised nearly to the point of not needing heat. If this swap is usually popular for people looking for bantams I'd say at least $5 and perhaps even $5.50. I guess the way I calculate it is that you have not only the cost of purchasing, shipping, and feeding, you have electricity and time invested, which have value. I realize these are not top of the line, show quality chicks, although some could turn out to be show quality, but they are carefully tended chicks well past the first week, which is the most likely time to lose chicks. Don't sell yourself short. If you get there and several others have similar chicks priced lower and they are not selling out immediately, then yes I would consider $4.50, but otherwise I would ask $5 if you want to sell out and $5.50 if you don't mind bringing some home with you. All depends on attendance, of course, combined with your desire to sell them now rather than later. Once they are past needing heat I ask $8.

And, how incredibly cool on your geese! What kind are they again? As far as I know the male will mate both. Are you able to tell the eggs apart? If so, mark them and try incubating and see what the hatch rate is for each marking. If not I would still incubate and if the hatch rate exceeds 50% it is probable the male is mating them both. Too cool!!!

Thanks for the input. :) If it goes well, I'll be sending you money instead of the other way around. :)

They are Embden geese and I have no way to tell them apart. We definitely plan to hatch some out. If we get enough some will be for food, and some to sell. We're currently waffling between getting/making an incubator vs letting the geese do the work. They are definitely starting to get angry that we're stealing the eggs. We have to wait to get them out of their hut until they're around the other side of the boys coop where they can't see us, otherwise they go on the attack.

I'm having a hard time imagining your situation. Are you talking about the rafter tails? The part of the rafter that makes the soffit?
Yes, sorry, should have looked at my instructions first to get the correct name for what I was asking. It says to snap a chalk line and then mark the cuts with a square, which makes sense, I just wondered whether there were things we should watch out for while we mark and make the cuts.

Well, I would be inclined to let them hatch the eggs themselves, but I've never had geese, I wonder if it makes them harder to work around? They can be pretty intimidating when they want to.

If you sell out, just keep the money, you did all the work.
