THANKS. I think I'll pickup a 75w flood light tonight. 16" is about the distance I have also.

Someone else said theirs is 16". I just checked mine an it is 12.5 inches from the top of the bedding. So a bulb this size may/may not work for you. You will most likely have to lower it a bit. At 16" I am in the upper 80's. The benefit of using the 75w(actually I just checked its 80w) is the reduced cost of operation. A 250w+ bulb is not cheap to run 24/7 for all those weeks. Edit: forgot to mention that the flood light is thicker glass then a brooder light and that is another benefit in my eyes. I really didn't like how fragile feeling those brooder bulbs are.

Good thing I checked the forum before I took off to the store. I'll see what they have in the 100w to 150w range. And DIDO on the fragile bulbs. I like the floods more also.

I ended up with a 125 flood light from lowes. It keeps the temp pretty steady at 95 about 16 inches away. Whats the difference between the red and white. Is the red supposed to be better for the chicks.

The main reason for red bulbs is that if a chick sees a blood spot it will peck at it persistently until the wearer of the spot is dead; the red bulb makes everything look the same color, camouflaging the blood spot and permitting the chick with the blood spot to heal. It also allows one to leave the heat lamp on all the time without keeping the chicks awake more than they should be. Right now I only turn on the white fluorescent when I'm down there checking on chicks, food, and water. The first day I left it on all day as I was down there several times to check on them. I noticed when I left only the red lights on the next day they stayed much quieter and calmer.

HI all,
I am playing on Youtube and my head is going to explode!
The maker of my coop is FarmNyard and they have soo many
new products for coops!

They are now doing heated roosting posts
heated dirt boxes,
birthing boxes located under the coop instead of inside
self cleaning coops
predator shocking coop entrances
100% fiberglass coops that you can hose out with a hose

it's mind blowing how many inventions Larry keeps creating!

if you want to see for yourself go to FarmNyard on youtube

Thats some good information to know. My chicks seem to be settling in rather well. One of the araucana's has pasty butt, but we are taking care of that. Nothing like wiping a chicks but in the morning to wake you up, LOL My two little girls woke up this morning to the sound of peeping chicks. I told them that if you leave a brooder set up long enough that chicks would appear. And so they have.
I found my BO rooster on top of the hen house after dark again this evening, I think he keeps getting kicked out as my leghorn rooster has claimed all the girls in my flock. I put him in his portion of the shed that I finished today, as this is part of the extended run projec that I am doing at the momentt.
My leghorn really gets quite upset when the BO rooster tries to cover one of the hens. I hope my BO rooster can stay alive long enough and stay away from the leghorn long enough for the chicks to grow up. These chicks will be his flock to tend to once they get old enough. His portion of the coop is almost done, I am just waiting on the hardware cloth to arrive. I got if off amazon for $7.00 more for 50 feet than anyone local wanted for 25 feet. with free shipping. It should be here by the 11th along with my led flood lights for my motion sensor light on my coop. It helps keep the predators away or at least I believe it does. There are lots of predators along fountain creek. The light has gone off many times since I installed it and when I look out generally nothing is there. There are prints in the morning however. I just want to reduce the load on the extension cord that I have run out there at the moment. They should draw .2 amps VS 7 amps from the floods that are in ther at the moment. The ones I ordered are the 10 watt. I have a 30 watt on my shop that puts out a lot of light. I believe it draws .3 amps.

i have a cuckoo maran chick that has a small, hard mass on her underside. Its about the size of a small grape and its "hip" level or so...there is also a small spot between the mass and the vent that looks almost like a tiny vent and it started bleeding a little tonight when i cleaned up her pasty butt.
Has anyone ever seen this? I noticed that the other chicks had the same sort of hardness where the mass is on my maran, but it wasn't enlarged like hers. Nobody else has that tiny vent looking thing either....
I'll try and get a pic if i can. I wouldn't have noticed either as much if she hadn't been damp from getting wiped down.

400

Plastic/brooding tub is setup. Just dialing the lamp heat in now. 95.5°! I moved the lamp to a hanging belt and raised it 4". Hopefully it's correct and holds temp.
Chicks should be here tomorrow!

Hi everyone! I'm not new to BYC, but I'd like to join in. I don't have chickens but I do have a pekin duck, named Soleil! I have to wait to get more land and then I will have my chickens :)
