Happy Spring! I know it's still February and snow may be on the way but we have chicks in the brooder and I'm ready for Spring. Yesterday we bought three chicks from Kiowa Country Corner and eleven from Elizabeth Country Corner. I had forgotten just how small chickens start out. Things seem to be working out and the little chicks act very happy.

I'm trying to post pictures but I've never used my phone for posting so we'll see if they work.

Does anyone else have Spring Fever?

So cute! I can't wait to get the rest of my babies! This makes me want to have a million chickens.

So I stopped by Bartlets in Falcon. Very impressed with their friendly atmosphere and customer service. Great prices too. I bought on bag of 20% protein layer feed. If the flock likes it, I will buy a bunch. I will get about $1 off if i buy a ton.

We stopped by there on the way to the Hanover-Elbert game. Elbert has beaten the Hanover girls in every game for nearly 15 years....UNTIL NOW! Hanover girls beat Elbert in Basketball 39-37!

I noticed no loss of egg production when I made the switch.

Yay, Hanover Girls!

Hah I like the colors! It's not harmful is it? I like the chicken diaper btw. I diaper my duck

It's koolaid in the rinse water. Not harmless at all but wear gloves or you'll be scrubbing the food dye off your hands too.

You are not right in the head! ROFL.

How is HE liking it? Or does he even care....?

I'm trying very hard to find him a home but every time he sees anyone from my flock, he runs in the house. I continue to put him outside everyday but he makes that beeline for the door. I suspect he is loving it inside the house. He goes in a box in the bathtub at night and he just cuddles into the shavings until I wake him up. His crowing is getting annoying but when he's in the bathtub, at least it stays dark longer. I may try the pantry tonight as he doesn't tend to move once he settles in.

I have an elderly friend who I'm trying to convince that she needs him. He's great for pecking up dirt on the floor and suspect he'll be awesome this summer for the flies. The dogs just ignore him but if I hear feathers ruffle, I'll usually check to see what's going on.

As for color...I'm thinking we should try green food coloring in the bath rinse next then maybe bring him out for St. Paddy's Day.

I picked up my babies. More to come next weekend. Apparently ducklings are too cute, and I couldn't say no. Three australorps and one odd duck out!
Aw! Cute little duck. We just put in our order of ducks with Metzer, but they won't get here till April...So we've been watching the hatching cam, my girls are glued to the iPad all weekend waiting for baby ducks to hatch. http://www.metzerfarms.com/LiveHatchingVideo.cfm

I wasn't expecting to get a duck at all, but it was just sooooo stinking cute. I have no idea if it's male or female. Maybe one day I'll get a surprise duck egg! I'm pretty sure this little one is a Pekin, but I'm not actually sure. Impulse buys! Ha!

Awe that's awesome! I don't think I could wait that long!! I can't wait to see pictures of yours.

Congrats on the win!! Yep, Bartlets is a well run hay/feed store! They are great people and know their hay! They have been buying from the same farmer for the last 30 years. They have the best straw too. Tried Big R's straw, no thanks.

Sooooo cute!!!

So, yesterday I looked in the coop and noticed a half of an egg, which tells me, someone is eating them.....
What do you all recommend, do I get rid of them all and start over, or is there anyway to find out who's doing it? Luckily, we only have 4 chickens and a turkey, so starting over is not a huge loss. Would explain why we haven't gotten eggs in 2 months, and I thought it was from the cold........

JUst a thought, turkeys need way more protein in their diet than chickens so maybe check the feed.

At noon when we left, Silkie egg number 1 had shell zipped all the way around but there was still most of the inner membrane intact. It's almost 3:30, and I know how bad this pic is, but wanted to know what other hatchers think - chick is alive, still trying to push out, but there seem to be strings of membrane that have dried keeping the halves of the shell together, and I can see some dried fluff. I generally don't believe in helping a chick out of the shell, but I'm torn on this one, so asking what you would do:

If the shell is zipped all the way around and the membrane is holding it together and turning white like it is drying out, I would help. A few snips of the membrane and chickie will probably be able to push its way on out. Membranes seem like they tend to dry out fairly easily here. I'm not a fan of helping too soon, but this little one may not be able to push the top off if the membrane is holding the shell still together and has dried out.
