Colorado

So the wife gave me a firm "no" when I asked to make another incubator.. So I was digging around in the garage to see what I could make it with when I stumbled on a ceiling fan I bought 2 years ago still in the box(was on clearance for 45$ had a remote etc.) any way I took it back to lowes said I couldn't find the receipt and they gave me store credit! $96 to be exact! So I was able to purchase the plywood, latches, piano hinge, door gasket and I still have $25 left in credit. I even splurged a bit and bought some high dollar 3/4" Maple Hardwood plywood. If it doesn't incubate eggs it sure will look sharp!

Now to convince the wife to let me get the heating element and the wafer thermostat...

Edited for spelling.
You may try ebay for the heating element and wafer thermostat. I saw a few on there a while back, under incubator parts. I cant remember which brand of incubator however.

per adams request: warning!! gross, bald chick bum picture

has anyone seen this before? Its the bum of my 2 wk old ancona chick. She's one of the 2 that seems to be stuck with pasty butt. I clean her daily, and it didn't look like this yesterday. I haven't seen any pecking in the brooder....there is a little acv and molasses in the water, clean shavings, unmedicated feed...they had greek yogurt once a few days ago...
Its shiny due to some neosporin.

If anyone near Colorado Springs, Woodland Park, or any other nearby areas needs any hatching eggs, feel free to PM me. I have some EE hatching eggs.

Hmm, so many eggs, so little hatch room. When I get my new incubator built you will definitely be receiving a call from me.. Give me a week or 2. I think I am going to try to get some eggs from samsr as well. Maybe from his neighbor again too. Might as well fill this baby up!! Kmatt87: thanks for the "Warning, nasty chicken butt picture to follow!" I was eating a bowl of cereal and scrolled down a little hastily... It took up all 4" of screen on my iphone5!

sometimes the fine hair on the underside gets pulled out with the cleaning of the pasty butt. It looks fine. The cloaka lips looks a little swollen but I suspect that is because of the nitrogen in the feces. Try some prep. h if you are too concerned.

edit: I'm not sure I'm seeing what you are calling burn. I see the swollen cloaka but that happens with the pasty butt. It should decrease in size with time but i always dab some prep h. Are you talking about the loss of hair? Sorry, it's late and perhaps my eyes just aren't working right. **** this older age. =)

i was talking about the loss of fuzz and the swelling. I don't think i mentioned a burn.....i think i typed bum. lol, but its getting late for me too.

i don't have any prep h. The swelling should go down eventually if i manage to keep her butt clean though, right?

Here are a couple pictures of my new little chicks. I have one BO, two aracaunas, one speckled sussex and the one with the little white bum is a black austrolorp. All are cute and cuddley. One chick is suprisingly larger than the rest. It is one of the aracaunas. These little ones sure do eat a lot. lol My kids are thrilled that we have little chicks in the basement. They are little cuties. That object in the brooder with them is a wireless thermometer/humidity detector.
Once old enough they will be taken care of by my BO rooster lucky, as he is henless at the moment. he is quite the outcast at the moment and spends his nights on top of the coop outside in the cold even though he has the run of the shed where the other chickens are not. He has the option to go into the coop but refuses to. (I think he is "chicken" of my leghorn rooster)

That's how I felt when I ordered my ducklings last year. I ended up with just one when the other one I ordered was DOA. I researched and got information before I even ordered but being inexperienced I was criticized highly for getting a duck. But you're so right.... People have to start somewhere. Instead of discouraging others, there should be more support for those wanting to become more sustainable.

I've only recently (1-2 yrs) come around to sustainability as a way of life as opposed to a big ideal that entire countries should strive for. With that in mind, I think that if people are open to a conversation and will actually LISTEN and clearly digest information on sustainable living... then a seed might get planted. My pet peeve is people who jump down your throat without a second thought. My mother in law doesn't understand why you would want to GROW vegetables when you can just buy them at the store. Can't wait to hear how she responds to back yard chickens... LOL!
