WOW! I know it's going to sound a little odd, but I'm glad to hear some of the 'family thinks I'm weird stories.' I guess they feel inspirational and supportive. I'm 27 and never really fit in with my family and am just now starting to grow a thicker skin when it comes to their judgments and opinions. Thanks guys!

SOOO cute! General chick question... I notice that some are holding themselves farther off the ground than others. Is this personal chick preference or muscle development?
Personality. Some want to see what's around them and others want to make themselves smaller. And one was pooping.

It's ok, it made me feel better too at some points. My family descended from farmers but no one has touched more than a gardening spade for two generations. Flower and vegi gardens abound but chickens... But then, I always was the odd ball.

Excellent question.

I suspect that it was just in the positions they found themselves in when the pictures were taken. Some breeds do seem to have shorter legs but I believe their difference is in just the position they were in when the pics were snapped.

On another note: The pic that made me giggle was the last one where there was a perfect chick poo behind. I could imagine that picture was snapped as the little chick was coming up from the squat.

OK.....

It looks like I will have this afternoon open to do chicken projects, as well as most of Saturday!

The 4 waterers that showed up yesterday are the 3 gallon little giant type. The roll of netting is ready to go and should be large enough to cover all 4 remaining pens. I have enough lumber to finish the gates and chicken ramps. All I need to do is get out there and get them done!

I would have worked on them yesterday afternoon, but I was in Rush and the Miami-Yoder VS Hanover girls Basketball game. Hanover Hornets won 37-27!!! If they win against Edison this friday they clinch the Black Forest League 1A title! This is unknown territory for Hanover.......

Adam7: If you can build a cabinet incubator that will accept 3 GQF turners and have digital controls and have a clear door, I might be interested for next year............. Then I could use the cabinet as the main incubator and my GQF one as a hatcher.......then I could be hatching each week........

chicken math oh chicken math..... The more I hatch the more I have to choose the best from!

O I could build it. I would need to find someone with one first so I could look at it, take some measurements and snap some pictures.... Darn you chickens!! L

I agree with what Mayah says. At this age, they are up and down alot. Now, in a week or three, you will start seeing personality play an increasing role in posturing. Its fun to watch, especially in sex-link breeds, because you can readily see the differences between the pullets and cockerels personalities start to come out.

OH MAN OH MAN OH MAN... I'm so excited!! But I have to wait close to two more weeks! I could see myself becoming a chick thief if I just knew where they were being held....

So, back when I bought a bunch of the initial stuff for chicks (waterer, food dish...) I also went ahead and bought medicated chick starter. I'm already having second thoughts about the medicated feed and might try to exchange it for non-medicated. But here's a question.. can I ferment it? Do I have to give the chicks non-fermented feed until a certain age and then they can eat fermented? Will fermenting medicated feed a) work and b) possibly (hopefully) negate the medication?

I am going to throw it out there that I am no expert and have never even owned chicks (getting our first ones next week!!!). But, I talked to a farmer for awhile yesterday about medicated feed when I was deciding what to do. He told me not to. He said the best analogy he had was giving a newborn penicillin everyday. Sure, they won't get sick. But they also won't be able to build up their immune system. Once you are done with the medicated feed, they are more susceptible to sickness. Not sure if this is accurate, but he sure seemed to know what he was talking about. We are not going to do medicated feed, but will medicate a chick if needed, not the whole bunch.

Just curious as to why you don't want medicated starter? I planned to get medicated starter for my chicks but if there is a good reason not to I would like to know!

Also I don't think fermenting medicated starter would remove the medication, my understanding of fermentation is that the bacteria eats the sugar only.
