Ok folks....newbie needs help...again...

Got the brooder box all set up...BUT.....couldn't find any 75 watt red bulbs. I had read somewhere on BYC that one could use the 60 watt yellow bug lights, but I think that was for when the chicks are older and don't need as much heat...is that so?

So, if I start the chicks out with a 250 watt red, how long should I keep that one with them? When it's time to lower the temp (which is when?) what bulb do I use next? I'd like to try and make one trip to get bulbs instead of 50!!

Also, I read someone was using the red reptile heat bulbs. Is that good too? They are definitely more readily available.

Thanks!

I got a 250w red great lamp bulb at walmart. Works great. I have it hanging from a belt, this way I can adjust it up to lower the temperature.
I heard to lower the temp 5° once a week.
I also have mine on a timer. It goes off at 5am for 1 hour & off at 5pm for 2 hours.

yes, that would be a sad day in my life.  It would be a good thing that I built a large chicken coop, as I would be sleepingin  there for a while.  it definately needs replaced.  there is no insulation in it at all as well as the heat deflectors are falling apart.
Hows the large incubator coming?  Looking for anything speciffic, that I may have lying around?

Slow going. I just don't have as much time as I want to work on it. Something is always coming up. I cut the opening for the 2 windows and routed the opening so the windows sit flush. Sanded the unit down, getting ready to stain it. I installed a switch for the power, I'm goin to install a light switch for lighting as well.. Still not sure what I'm going to light it with. I'm thinking white Christmas lights. Any ideas would be great: just need to be able to see the eggs without producing a lot of heat. I think I am going to break down and order the wafer thermostat and the heat element tonight. I still need to build the 2 drawers, just thinking of what wood I am going to build them out of. I don't have enough of the 3/4" maple left.

Gotta get some sleep, maybe I can get a bit more done tomorrow.

Busting out the coop. Hardwares all installed & then removed for painting. Doors hinged and the nest door is framed up + hinged.
All I got left is 2 bottom panels, a ladder, wiring and....... the chicken door. Still stumped on the chicken door.
Put in my order for the replacement sebrights with the Co-op today also.
I'll add photos to my Berthoud page tomorrow.

Thanks for the response.....I just don't want to cook the little fuzzies or freeze them either. I'll get a 250 watt tomorrow.

Oh, and using a timer sounds like a good idea....is that for temperature control?

The timers more to get/keep them on a day/night schedule.
I kept them@ 93° for the 1st week & then started dropping the temp.

I think i would have to go with some led under cabinet lighting. Either the rope atuff or strips. Amazon has some pretty goot pricing on the stuff. That way the humidity wouldnt break the stuff down too fast.

I have 2 extra barred rock pullets if you're interested. They're about a week old now. I'd sell the for $5 each. If you're interested, pm me and we can figure it out.

Eta: they are unvaccinated and have been fed unmedicated food.
Thanks to everyone who posted with chicks. I was looking for two unvaccinated barred rocks.. shortly after I posted I got a call from a lady with 2...just what we needed, so now our flock is complete. Thanks so much to all of you who posted. We have been using an organic feed for chick starter, scratch and layer food from Ranch Way Feed in Fort Collins or Greeley, not sure which. It has corn in it and soy. I am interested in finding a local source for organic feed that doesn't contain soy and corn. Is anyone here using such a feed and know where I can get it? Thanks very much. I will post pics of the new babies soon.
