Colorado

I almost feel sorry for people who have to commute in this. What a mess. Do you let your birds out in these temps, or keep them cooped up? P.S. Wendell, did your netting make it?
I was one of the lucky ones that got to commute this morning! It really wasn't too bad though. I just had to work my way around all the stuck cars. LOL

I'm picking up some shipped eggs today and am going to be hatching at altitude...what is the general consensus-increase humidity? No turning for first few days of hatch? Seems most experience the big losses at the end of the hatch...I'm at 8000' . I don't have huge expectations...I'm setting 12 eggs and would love to have 3 or 4 hatch...

Wendell (WSmith) has had the best luck with shipped eggs. I've tried matching humidities from where they are shipped with limited success. I didn't have good luck with increasing humidities. Just keep your expectations very low and don't beat yourself up if none of them hatch.

Coloradogal- that is a fantastic add for your frizzle rooster! :) Hope you find a home for him!

I actually had a senior citizen lady email me and I just spoke to her on the phone. She is very interested and keeps doves now. I've had a few other responses but mostly for being an outside chicken. He is so terrified of chickens. I'm starting to get bittersweet now about letting him go as he runs to me now the moment he gets afraid. But if I can find him a home with someone else who will spoil him and he'd be happy... I think he'd become even happier. She didn't bat an eye at the rehoming fee nor did she try to talk me down. I was surprised by that. It gives me comfort to know that she sees his value.

BTW: The reason for the high adoption fee is my concern that Joe, the free chicken/goat guy from CL will see that ad and want him or send a surrogate to claim him. By doing this, I assure that he won't be taken just for the soup pot. I told my brother of my goal of finding him a home and told him the rehoming fee... he looked shocked and my first inclination was, 'is it too little?". He thought too high but he's just so sweet and deserves a chance at another home. A rooster is the perfect indoor pet once you get the diapers as then you don't have to worry about the egg.

'll get back with you tonight on my experience @ 8600 ( when my newc computer is up and running) Let the eggs rest and load tomorrow. what kind of eggs?

Crap. Can chickens be kept with doves? I know they chickens can't be kept with some other types of birds. Doesn't anyone know? I'm doing a search now and can't find anything regarding this. Any dove keepers on here know?

Mine stayed with a goose for a while, I doubt that helps. On another note there is a photographer looking for chick pics - he's even offering a reward. Go to 'family life...' in social and look for 'Photo's needed'. I know you have better looking birds than I do

Hey! I've seen this on CL. He's the one that wants to take chickens and goats and give them a good home or something, right? What is that dude's deal?

I just confirmed something I already knew this morning. Do not use cruise control and 4wd at the same time!!! My whole life flashed before my eyes on the way to the gas station and it was really friggin boring.

I don't know the whole story but everything from selling the animals at auction for medication medicine to all sorts of other things. I called him once and then he called a few times after to try to convince me he was a good man. He doesn't coop them up. He lets them free range. Then he tells me that he goes through 100# of feed a week on his small flock of 20 because he just lets them eat at will. Now we all know what a crock of bullcrap that is. His name is Joe and just be careful of anyone willing to take a rooster off your hands if you care at all what happens to them.

I even asked how he kept the roosters from fighting... No good answer other than they don't. Most of us have pets that just happen to be chickens. The chickens have no clue to how fend for themselves.

Ok, rant off. Just be warned. This guy is dishonorable. If someone doesn't give a crap about their birds, fine. Let them send them to auction. If someone just wants to get rid of rooster, I can at least insure that the rooster is culled gently, quickly and was cared for before hand. There is no need to mistreat the animal prior. I respect people who are honest with culling when they must and for food, etc. I have little respect for people like Joe. Ok, this time I really mean rant off. He just irks me.

Sorry for having a giggle on this one... but I just can't help it.

Lol...it's not how good looking the birds are but how much we cherish them. It's been my experience that some of the most plain looking birds end up being some of the sweetest.

I would never! I prefer to call it multitasking.

I'll take that into consideration next time I get the urge to cruise through 5+ inches of snow! Ha! I'm glad that you still get a chance to make your life a little less boring.
