Colorado

On the Colorado Chickens FB group we have a post where people can note if they can take evacuated poultry. We have lots of BYC and FB chicken friends all along the Front Range who can accomodate if needed. If you have friends who are not on BYC or Colorado Chickens who need somewhere for their chickens to go during this emergency, please direct them either here or to the Colorado Chickens FB page.

With a little re-arranging, I can take three groups of 5-6 at my place.

Yesterday afternoon it was hot, and most of the mature birds were hanging out inside the main hen house. I pulled out the hose and wet down the bedding inside the main coop which whithin a few minutes had lowered the temp by about 5 degrees. I wet down the smaller pens underneath the small coops, and within a few minutes all the chickens were cooling off in the damp shade.
So far all my chickens are dealing with this heat wave just fine, and only a slight drop in egg production.

How's everyone else's doing?

100 F degrees here in Boulder yesterday. I was complaining earlier about three of my birds that are not laying at all, or sporadically. I wondered if the heat had anything to do with it. I was making plans to cull those three birds this weekend. And of course, you know what happened yesterday? I got 14 eggs from 14 hens. They know don't they? I'll see what happens in the next few weeks.

Everyone please stay safe. I am probably too far north to be of any help. But if anyone needs room for chickens in Boulder let me know.

For those who didn't see the announcement on the Colorado Chickens FB group or on our Windy Ridge Dominique FB page, we currently have 13 eggs in the incubator that are developing. These are out of Abraham and the hens in pen #3 !
We threw away 11 that were duds, and put an additional 12 in. Very happy about this new development. We are planning on hatching until the end of July if we start having successful hatches.

Yay, I'm so excited for you and Beth. Your very own chicks!!

Chook chick, congrats! Terrific news! I would suggest you continue to feed grower and add oyster shell free choice. Sharon, I have some juvenile RIR that I plan to breed later this year, probably fall to late fall when they're old enough, but they will be my first so if they are anything like the ones I"m growing right now, I wouldn't venture a guess (at least a confident one) until they are in the neighborhood of 4-6 weeks of age. I might improve my sexing skills in the meantime, I have some eggs in the incubator now that I got from Greathorse (Paul) up in Berthoud which I'm hoping for a hatch from.
Pozees great news for my friend, as I can certainly recommend you to her. I watched a video on you tube last night. Some guy in the UK says you can feather sex them. Says the females have a stripe down the back of their head and the males don't. He didn't say how old they had to be to do this, but I'm guessing the chicks in the video were 2-4 weeks old.

This must be new information? I heard on the radio last night on the way home that it could have been dry lightning from days earlier that smoldered in a tree for a while before igniting with help from the high winds we've had.
