Colorado

thanks! I have a 25 X 35 foot run, 6 foot fencing and bird netting over the whole top. Do you think a turkey would be lonely? Would it try to roost in the coop with the chickens for warmth?

Wendell's are with his chickens, I think they roost with the chickens for safety as much as anything else.

This thread is really just a handful of you that are friends. It's not really a Colorado thread. Since I'm not with the 'in crowd', I'm gonna bow out of the CO thread. Good luck with all your babies!

The people in this thread have been posting here together for a long time. You share your interests with like minded people for months and months, you're going o form friendships.

There are a lot of nice knowledgable people here in Colorado. But forming friendships takes time.

There are wild turkeys all over our yard. They sleep in the trees about 70 feet up and you would never know they were there, even if you look for them. We throw scratch grains out every morning and up to 60 will come by to eat, before wandering off to the next house, I assume. The chooks free range with them without a care in the world. One thing, though, you almost never see a lone turkey, they like to roam around in packs.

Thanks P-Funk.
Should I not adopt just one Turkey then?
We have serious predators here. I have the land to let this one
free range, but with the owl, several hawks, bears, bobcat, and
coyetes.... I don't think the birdie would last long. That is why
I am wondering about putting it in with my chickens.

That I couldn't say

sorry. I once adopted a wounded (gunshot) goose. He lasted about a week before wandering off one day. I assume he was looking for another goose.

I guess I don't understand this posting. Most of us have become friends, some may have never met in person, but it's because of our mutual interesting chickens and being in Colorado. Hate to see anyone leave the thread, but that's up to the individual. Hope to see you again on the forum.

Ok chicken friends... what do I need if I want to adopt a 2 month old turkey?
I have a huge dog house in my chicken run. Will that be suitable
for her? Will she roost with the chickens? Will she eat chicken food?
Advise please! Wendy
Turkeys will be fine with your chickens, but they still have to work their way up the pecking order. They are WAY bigger than chickens, so be prepared for the size differences. That being said, turkeys love being with their own as well, and when there are more than one turkey they tend to stick together. Do you have room for two? If so, I would get a pair.

Well this is the first time posting on this thread but I have never felt excluded. This is my first time with chicken and have really enjoyed reading and learning from all of you. My girls are healthy and happy and a lot of that is due to all of the reading I have done here. I feel sure if I have questions they will be answered.
Welcome to the Colorado thread. What kinds of chickens to you have?

just an update from my little patch of lnd here along fountain creek. I was picking spinach and swiss chard this afternoon. Basically the damaged leaves from the hail last week and placing them in a pile. The chickens noticed what I was doing and came over for a taste. I now know what to do with the hail damaged leaves. Don't compost them just get them close to a chicken and watch it disappear. It was a feeding frenzy. leaves and stems were going everywhere. Every once in a while one of the new smaller hens would make a mad dash out of the center of the group with a leaf in her mouth and about 5 would follow. trying to get her to drop it. I really need to take some videos when I try the chickens out on new things. I do have an overabundance of spinach and swiss chard. 3 rows of chard 4 feet long and 2 rows of spinach the same length. Does anyone need some? My wife planted way to much. It sure is good though. The chooks think so too.

It is always something new with them. Its a good thing there is a fence around the garden bed at the moment.
