Colorado

Hello,
I am new to the forum.
Suncatcher has been very kind to help me out here and got me to the Colorado Forum.

I am in Fountain Colorado. Have a few chickens at a friends house.
He has more room than I do.

Michael
Hello Michael, Glad you found the Colorado thread. You can also post your pullets for sale on the Sales/Trade page, and post a link here for the local folks. Again, welcome!

Welcome ACLV. I am also in fountain or a bit south of fountain that is. Glad you made it to the thread. As you know already there are lots of good people here with good information.

I have a few chickens with a friend down in Midway.
I have the Fountain Chicken license but am afraid my dogs would enjoy
the experience of Chickens just toooo much.

So I do not keep them here.
They are the Aracaunas.

Good morning all!
My female turkey escaped through our bird netting and I spend the morning chasing her through the scrub oak until I caught her. She wouldn't have stood a chance with the bobcat, coyotes, and bear in our neighborhood. After our traumatic catch, I gave everyone some pumpkin as treats. Here are a few pictures I took.

First I wanted to say: I'm so glad to hear that Beth's MRI was clear. I've been praying for you both since you posted.

I've been reading and catching up on the news for the past month. Hope to be more active around here in the future.

Anyway, I have a request for help to toss out there to anyone that might be able to help or know of someone.

As I mentioned, we lost our private drive due to the recent flooding. We live off grid on an old family property (6 generations), no well or septic, yet, so we haul everything up and down our little mountain side. We have been walking in an out since the flooding and have tried to figure out if staying for the tough mountain winter will work.

So...long and short of it, our answer has come in a disappointing way, but it's an answer.

We happen to have neighbors that are not thrilled that we moved up here full time a few years back... and turned the property back into a little farm adding chicks, ducks, goats, another dog, cats, etc. You know, a small little farm on acreage up in the mountains...something so many people dream about...and we have every right to do!

Our neighbors have been difficult, to say the least (calls to sheriff when we shoot a gun, health dept b/c we have so many animals that must be contaminating their wells...and so on) The complaints have been numerous since the flooding, no one has anything better to do these days I guess than to keep tabs on what we are doing (we finally made an appointment to have the health dept out to see our place and put an end to the calls) and when that blew the complaints out of the water they found something else to work...

With the road missing, imagine 2 cars being swallowed up in the largest section, we have needed to cross private property to get down to the highway. This place is a vacation home which isn't used much at all.

The full-time neighbors called the property owners and complained that we were crossing and they called us and promptly refused us permission to cross. We now can not walk in or out and therefore need to leave until the road is fixed in Spring.

The reason: they don't want us to wear out the lawn (which I understand) but then the kicker reason?!?! They were up here last week and our dog was barking too much and Okay, I admit it, it's true, he barked a lot that particular day. In fact, he was barking a ton...a bobby snuck in and grabbed one of our ducks
hit.gif
...of course he was barking! But "his barking is bringing their property value down" and they just don't like us having him here...
Huh? THAT'S a reason to be unkind and make life during a disaster more difficult for a family?!?!?

So, it's really hard to teach my children to be kind to our neighbors and not be poisoned by their venom when I feel like shooting my guns more often and dumping my barn muck on their lawn to give them real reason to complain...

We have just come to take it as an answer to our looming question: can we really keep doing this without a road all winter.

Anyway, sorry, got distracted...Obviously, I have farm animals I need to re-home; its not just easy to pack up and leave. We have a family who winters in CA that have offered us their house, but no animals except our one really old dog is allowed.

Is anyone able to take some chickens and ducks, I have a home for most of them (it's a little much for the family that is taking them to take them all, but they will if need be). I think I have a home for the LGD and our cats, but if another possible spot for back up is available that would be great too.

Most importantly, I can not find anyone who can take the last two goats, they are doeling kids (who are weaned). One kid is actually for sale, maybe both, but right now, I'd just like to find someone willing to house them for us.

So, that wasn't so short of a story. Sorry, when I got going it was a little hard not to stop, and I'm SURE many of you totally understand the troubles of neighbors who don't like you. Or maybe not, I wouldn't wish that anyone had neighbors like these people!

I am sorry, the image of people coming together during a disaster just isn't as true as we would like to think. Except here! I hope someone here can help you, I wish I could. When you get back maybe you should look in to some really loud creatures for your little farm, or a barnyard CD blasted when you are not there. I guess I would not help your kids either. ;)

I wanted to stop back in for a moment and say, I'm sorry I ranted a little much last night.

There are so many people in such worse shape than we are in, reality is, we are blessed, even in all this trouble. While we were inconvenienced by the road washing out, at first, and now more so because of the neighbor's unkindness, my children and husband are still here with me, our cabin is still standing, by a miracle, and our animals were unharmed (until the bobby came), I am blessed. Upset with the meanness of some people, but really blessed. People around us have lost everything, some even their lives or loved ones...my neighbors will be what they will be...

I am just getting over the shock of it all myself....there is an idea that people do come together in times of need/disasters...and I think that for the most part that is true. It's been so utterly unbelievable to me that these folks are so hateful that they wouldn't even be a help in a simple way. We would never dream of just walking across their property at any other time!

But, I am thankful that other people are willing to step in. We have an offer for help from here already!

We have heard and have experienced so many blessings, first from the wildfire that came through last fall and now this. People do step up, we do see many reaching out to others, and its neat to meet people we might not otherwise have. There are good people in this world, we don't need to look far to find them.

Property values...if my hubby was reading your response right now, he'd have a little rant himself...reality is, they are almost always based upon the sale of the properties in your area, not based upon dogs that bark or a little farm that moved in! And we live outside of Estes which has been booming with building. The property values are going up constantly and are staggering to us!

The real issue here is that these folks are retired, have lots of money and want to sit back and not be bothered by anyone...I have met more grumpy retirees up here than I ever dreamed! It's so weird to me, I mean, really, you've worked hard all your life (assumption of course), you now get to sit back in a beautiful spot in Colorado with stunning views of Long's and other peaks resting on your laurels and you're grumpy? Gosh, I'd be thrilled if I was retired and could run my little farm without having to work hard earning money too!
wink.png

But I can't change them, I can try to put myself in their shoes...maybe...not sure I want to walk in them, but I suppose they could be lonely and have no one in their lives to love them, that would make me grumpy too. And it's a reason to also feel sorry for them. Stuff burns or gets flooded and ruined, but having friends, loved ones, and even BC acquaintances is worth more than all the gold in the world and big fancy houses IMHO.

I can only hope that things will be better in time. And keep trying to learn and teach my children to love others no matter what they are like...boy, that's hard, really hard when I have to model it to them first. But it's a lesson I'll not forget...I hope I can remember in 20 more years, when I'm old and gray, to love my neighbors no matter what they do with their property or how much their dog barks...course I probably will be deaf, so it won't matter.
