Our wind died down about noon yesterday. This morning we had a beautiful pink sunrise, now the sun is shining and warming things up. By tonight I think most of my snow will be gone. BUT: the melted snow is soaking into the ground, which is awesome.

So I'm already planning to add some Barred Rocks to my flock next spring and I started thinking about Pozees' Mareks troubles this year and how my existing birds' Mareks vaccination might affect the new arrivals. Does anybody know if there is one type of Mareks vaccination or are there different vaccines for different strains? If there are different strains then I could see the possibility that the new birds could be vulnerable to being infected by my old birds. If there is only one type of vaccine on the market then it would make sense to vaccinate the new ones too. Any advice about this would be appreciated.

The vaccine used by hatcheries is a triple vaccine - not available for purchase by us as far as I know. The vaccine we can buy is still live vaccine but only one strain. That doesn't mean it won't work, it should work fine.

My plan for the future is to find some Midget White Turkey eggs or poults, or failing that I may look into the Blue Slates, which are not as big as I thought they were.

Today I loaded up my two turkeys and took them to my son's elementary school. I had offered to do a live turkey presentation to his kindergarten class. When the principal heard about the idea she asked if I would do it for all the K, 1st, and 2nd grade classes. I figured the hardest part was getting them to school. So I said sure. II had 9 classes come outside and gather around my XL wire doggie kennel and I did a 15 minute presentation on turkeys. The kids were really excited to see a real Turkey. By noon I was done, just as the sun was starting to shine. My turkeys sure were happy to be home!

I bet they asked a lot of interesting questions Did many of them know what their turkey dinner looked like before it was dinner?

Pozees- I was surprised at the cute questions asked. Like, where are their teeth? How can you tell a wild turkey from a pet turkey? Do they use their spurs like sword fighters? Why do their knees bend backwards?
I did a small lesson on body parts, predators, daily schedule, fun facts, and then a Q & A.

I am not too sure if they connected my cute pets with THEIR turkey dinner or not. They were most fascinated by Turkey Lurkey's head changing color, his snood and wattle too. During one of the presentations 3 large deer walked by and he went into alarm mode. He was gobbling soo loudly and his head was bright red. The class thought that was really great. He didn't strut at all. I think he was too nervous and scarded. Although the minute we got home he puffed up and walked around for hours!

Wondering if anyone on here is going to be showing at the National Western Stock Show in Denver? What are the dates of the poultry show? Im hoping to come see some good breeding stock of heritage birds.

Poultry go the same time as the drafts so good for me. The last Thursday-Sunday.

If anyone is interested, the National Western will host the North American Championship 6 Horse Hitch again. It's the draft horse world's SuperBowl.
