Okay I need help, Arry's nails have gone out of control so I thought I would clip them....bad idea. I clipped one I thought far enough out and it just gushed blood. Now I am not only felling really bad but I have her in the quarantine cage while the other two go nuts on me. I had to use blood clot powder and tomorrow I will put neosporin on it but I need to cut the other nails and I am afraid to now. Is there anything I should do for this nail to prevent infection other then what I am doing?

Honestly other than styptic powder I don't think I would worry. I used to have to trim dog nails very short for shows and they would often bleed. I just used the blood stop powder pressed against the cut end briefly until it stopped bleeding and that was it. That said, I can't say I've had to trim any chicken nails yet so maybe there's something I don't know about chicken nails.

Arry's are ridiculously long, they are curving sideways, and I can tell walking is hard for her. She still digs but since I got her home they have gotten to and inch long. I am feeling really bad so she will be spoiled for a few days for my mistake. She just bled so badly.

I have that issue with my silkies toenails. I don't think she scratches as much as other chickens, and her middle nail got way too long. After I clipped it, it dripped blood for a bit, but was eventually fine. I don't think she even cared, just walked off looking for more treats.

Well, I know that in dogs, cats and also horses to some extent.. when nails get too long, the feeder blood also gets too long, as you found out. It is recommended to cut them back over a period of time insuring that the blood vessel has time to retreat. Like a quick short trim every week and a half taking off what has grown and a bit more of the too long.

Just chillin in yard...so nice for dec 1!!! The shed is outfitted for the birds, very roomy and easy to clean. Only drawback will be where the shed and run meet as snow will run off each and down the middle.

This splash silkie cockerel is available, cheap as he is pet quality due to 4 toes on 1 foot, a crooked toe and red leakage in neck

Toe nail trimming--i notice i have to keep up trmming every so often so they dont get long and twisted. Watch for the blood vein in light nails as for dark ones its a guess where the vein ends. I'd agree just monitor her foot and the stypic powder is sufficient

I will do that, just feel bad I didn't start with that.
