Colorado

So beautiful, something about the Silkie eyes, they look so soft and dreamy!

Opus looks to be a very sturdy boy!! What breed is he again?

Opus is what we decided last year to call Colorado Mayahn - he is from coloradogal's flock, which is a mixed group of chickens that have grown up and thrived here. From the feathered legs I'm guessing one parent is Marans or possibly Cochin, although then I would expect the toes to be feathered as well. I can't wait to see how he turns out :)

I agree about Silkie eyes.

Talked to Paul this afternoon, he is going to bring a RIR cockerel to the stock show for me :)

The pullets should start laying any day now, so I'll be excited to add him and start hatching some beautiful pure heritage RIR chicks :) Fingers crossed all goes well!

Hi All,
Update: today I got 10 eggs. It seems taking out my rooster and one red star had stopped the crazy egg eating. I still feel bad though.

That is a lot of eggs! Nothing to feel bad about, you tried to break them of their habit, thankfully the other hens are fine. Managing a flock you sometimes have to weed out a few.

I had two eggs yesterday, I was getting an egg every other day, so maybe they will start to lay more. Although two of my girls will be three this coming spring, and another will be five, guess they are slowing down.

Can't wait to see what you hatch out with your purebred heritage RIR's! Very nice! Do you know if there is anyone in Colorado who raises the old time heritage Barred Rocks? I know there are few breeders in KS, Good Shepherd, and one other, but wondered if someone might raise them here in Colorado.

I'm not aware of any high quality heritage (non-hatchery) breeders in Colorado, but that doesn't mean there arent any. One of the best ways to find out is to contact the national BR club and ask for Colorado breeders contact info. That's how we do it in the American Dominique club.

Who all is going to the stock show that has bantam hatching eggs? I'm hoping that would be a good time to get some all in one spot instead of driving all over the state!

Not sure I will have eggs the end of January, hope my bantams start laying soon! I would need ot get them on an egg express up to the Stock Show though........

You can sometimes get baby poults from the feed stores, and Big R. Also, does anyone know if the new Big R on Powers and Constitution is open yet????
