Colorado

Wind picked up this morning here, from the south, then a few really wet snow flakes, now nothing, and wind has shifted, now coming from the North West...... Crazy weather!

Looking forward to what is still viable when you candle Jenifer! Are any of your Frizzles getting curling feathers?

It surprises me that more people here in Colorado don;t know who Temple Grandin is, but I gues not everyone is into agriculture. She is just an amazing young woman with a beautiful gift of insight.

Out of the 4 frizzles there is 1 that I think is definitely a boy. It is feathering in much slower than the others. 1 looks like it will be frizzled, 1 looks smooth, and the other looks like it has silkie feathers! It has no other silkie traits though. I'm going to list the boy for sale and then keep the rest to see how they feather in.

Only one rooster, you did well! I ended up with three out of five, but they were such mellow boys, they are easy to keep around. CampLeader bought one of my white hens that I picked up at Kiowa from their frizzle pen, she is smooth though, but very sweet, as are all bantams.

Any one come across a Americana rooster, around the Elizabeth area, let me know. I can't find straight run for sale just pullets.

Are you looking for a particular color? I have some 6 week olds I'm keeping to grow out for a while, came from a Lavender over Black pen, hatched here, bought the eggs from Hardin Poultry. I feel fairly sure some will be boys, I have not taken a close look at them because I just wanted to let them do some growing - and they have!

I'll be out replacing elastic leg bands again this weekend, or at least that's the plan, I've come down with a chest cold and that in combination with the weather has me feeling like not doing much, but that at least has to get done, so I'll try to note number of males and females.

I want to move that whole group to a grow-out pen and clear the house brooder which has a baker's dozen chicks that just hatched between Tuesday and yesterday. Tuesday was the Welsummers, looks like I have 2 boys and 2 girls, then Thursday and Friday I hatched some eggs from a woman in NY who has a rather eclectic mix (BCM, SFH, Brabanters among them), a couple from Papa Brooder's Silkie/Sizzle/Frizzle Bantam Surprise pen, one of which is a lovely fluffy Paint, and my first two home bred RIR. The RIR will be staying, the mixes will be sold, and I am on the fence about whether to keep the Welsummers and grow them out. I love the breed, but not sure it makes sense to keep them. I have more Wellie eggs from the same breeder in the incubator now, headed for the hatcher with Wendell's eggs on Wednesday.

I might have an easter egger bantam roo. We have 5 straight run. No idea how many boys/girls though.

I candled our eggs from Suncatcher and Pozees today. Pozees silkies are all developing! With suncatcher's we had 4 throw aways. 2 of those were the cracked ones. They were clear, I don't think they ever started developing. 2 others were blood rings. There's one that looks clear but the shell is on the darker side so we're leaving it until the next candling. The 2 maran eggs are too dark to tell for sure so they'll be staying in. :)
Very excited! Our temps have held steady. The humidity drops over night into the high teens, we add a few drops of water in the morning and it goes back into the mid twenties. I'm happy with it at this point.

Off topic FYI....... did you know that the purple cauliflower, when steamed, turns an amazing DEEP blue/purple color and a teal color where it touches the water in the steamer? Looks very alien and I would have so much fun making pictures if I had toddlers in the house! Think of the possibilities - green trees, white clouds or ghosts, aliens or flowers......... I'm getting the orange cauliflower next time......

I can't wait to hear what you hatch!

Oh, I am definitely going to look at cauliflower seed other than white this year! Thanks!

I like the orange cauliflower. I'm not a fan of cauliflower but the orange one (and to a lesser extent the purple) have a different flavor. The orange one is sweeter or something.
I didn't even think of looking for seed for those. I already started my cauliflower inside for this year. Maybe I'll start another one. ;)

Hi all. I don't post often I have a small backyard flock of 6 girls about a year old but i read it everday. We just bought a small ranch 18 acres and I can't wait to move and get a few more girls. Probably won't move until April. So excited! Unfortunately my husband couldn't wait and brought home 3 new girls -12 weeks old. I can keep them apart in the pen and when out free ranging the backyard but I only have one smaller coop. Should I just bring them in the house at night? How long does it take to integrate new girls? Thanks and I LOVE all the baby chicks! Thanks Tracie
