Egack! Another night of chasing Nell around the run to get her into the coop at night. What the cluck Nell!? There's plenty of room even for 3-4 more full sized lf hens in my coop, everyone is getting along fine, why has she now decided she's not made for sleeping inside the safe coop?!
we have a RIR that has taken to not wanting to go in the coop at night for the last few nights, she has been trying to roost in the enclosed run. Something must be in the air, I did read that chickens do not have great night vision, so once it starts to get dusk, the panick sometimes and roost up, wherever that maybe!

And now thinking... oh I should totally add quail! Stop me please!!

I don't think you suffer from Chicken Math, I think you suffer from DK math, lol. How do you have room for all those birds, and are your neighbors cool having a bird lady next door? Just kidding you know!

Yum. I just did some canned peaches and peach preserves the other day. Today is a great day to work on that kind of stuff!
I agree, I think I will be freezing most of them, maybe leave some out for a homemade cast iron skillet pie! Canning is a lot of work and my poor arms can't take that as I have nerve damage from my screwed up neck. It was funny, we picked them up in Hygiene and on the drive home, my BF snarfed three down and I had two, then we had one for dessert and I had one for breakfast. So good!

I make peach ice cream, but with actual peach puree ice cream and chunks of peaches (like they make strawberry ice cream. In fact I have to use a strawberry ice cream recipe! The whole family loves it. So, we end up eating ice cream and salads for dinner. LOL!

I made peach ice cream last year and my daughter and her friend loved it. Unfortunately I'm allergic to them fresh so no peach ice cream for me. :(

Ooohhh I want peaches! I cleaned out my deep freezer for the 1/2 grass fed cow and we have plenty of room lol.

Cochix- the property next door has been abandoned for 6+ years... and my others neighbors love us and our chickens lol. So they're fine with it, and our place is deceptively large... I have a gelato machine ahem. Yes, it's dangerous around here lol.

Quail are small. And I have these 2 big shelving units in my barn which is also lined with shelves, and I was browsing byc and saw quail.. and thought, hmm.. I can do that!?! Then I think... hmm.. can I fit some goats? My bf needs to not be so handy lol. He's aware that I'm still expecting 18 more chickens within the next 2 weeks... but he's not helping things by NAMING the meaties, & driving me every weekend to my friend's place with the haffies and cemani chicks to scoop up to bring home! And then he's telling me, hey, maybe we should move some of the meaties to our laying flock.. which well, we might get more room if Nell ends up raccoon bait.

I've been making a lot of sun dried tomatoes from my prolific san marzano plants. What was I thinking planting 5 kinds of tomatoes? The purple Cherokee aren't doing so hot, but the German johnson and indigo rose are nice and meaty/juicy. The chickens love tomatoes too.. but not as much as sprouted boss!

I need to keep myself from getting more chicks this weekend from my friend. I'm TRYING to control my math..

I'm thinking of planting garlic this month...would be my first planting on this property. Any tips?
Oh...anyone dealing with ground squirrels? They are making me crazy! They all all over the front yard, half an acre, and tearing up the unfenced back acre. They aren't inside the fenced acre, I think because of the dogs? The Boston's, and Great Dane find their holes, and dig like four feet down...so they've learned to stay away. But, they've tore up my tiny flower bed in the front, and making me not want to plant anything in the circle driveway. Someone said wrapped juicy fruit, but that doesn't sound effective. I tripped into a covered hole last week, and almost broke my ankle.

When planting garlic. Just make sure they are in nice lose soil. Burry them the depth plus a half of the bulb. Garlick does like nitrogen, so feel free to mulch it with fresh bedding out of the coop. Be sure to keep it watered throughout the winter.
I plant elephant garlick every year and have a pretty good crop. I use it in my home canned pickles. The family generally fights over the pickled garlic once the pickles are gone.
Good luck. And enjoy.
Ground squirrels are open to hunting all year round. Btw
Or let the dogs out. Lol

That's great information about garlic planting. I'm fixing to muck out my enclosed run for my layer flock and we were thinking of planting garlic in the area where my salad patch is at currently. What else can/should be planted there as it only gets dappled sun & is on the other side of the fence from the laying flock chicken run?

I need a pole digger to finish my next chicken run area. What kind of screws to put hardware cloth 1/2" into landscape logs? Need to keep raccoon, skunks, squirrels and duck billed magpies out of the runs vexing my chickens and eventually whatever plants I put in there. A mouse was in my medical garden yesterday and under my meaties coop the day before. Will the meaties eventually kill the mice if it gets in the run? They're dp breeds, not cornish x.

I have a cage I think I can easily set up for quail. Mtn margie-what breed of quail do you have? I may end up at the bird swap in Brighton this weekend under the pretense of looking for valbazen for the next time I worm, as I used safeguard and wazine this past time & wardel's, Murdoch's & big r didn't have valbazen... so if it just happened to be when a swap was going on and there happened to be say 10 jumbo quail there... and since I have 26% protein gamebird feed at home anyways.. and if they take only 6 weeks to mature to lay eggs/process then it's like a different cornish x type project which I'm trying not to cave into doing... my chef friends would buy quail eggs from me too..

Thank you. I'm looking at some garlic on Burpee, and think I might try two varieties. Once grown, and dried how long does it stay usable? I don't want to plant too much if I can't use it all before it goes bad.
I can't let the dogs in the back acre till it's fenced. We're in an actual neighborhood, just big lots. I thought about just putting mouse traps everywhere...then I worried about killing the toads on accident. I hate those little squirrels.
