Colorado

Hi guys. So, One of my birds died a couple days ago, a younger one, and now I have another acting funny. I'm quite worried of what it could be, and was wondering, where can we send a bird for necropsy? I'm freaking out a little, because we have all these plans for our flock, and if we have mareks those plans are ruined.

Call your local vet, they can point you in the right direction. What are their symptoms? Their age? Might help you figure out what they are dying from. Also, could it be a bad batch of feed?
Hope it is something non contagious!

Actually, it's only the Cream Legbars...these are just the worst birds. They seem to be so inbred, with lack of new lines, that fertility and mortality are greatly effected. it almost seems as though they're starving to death. I thought at first that maybe we moved them to pellets too soon, because when I finally realized one was acting funny I felt her crop, and it was totally empty. They're just so stupid, they weren't eating. So I moved the one back with the chicks, and she got crumble, and ate and ate. But she died yesterday, again her crop seemed totally empty. And now I have a second, about a month older Cream and she seems to not be eating. I've moved all the cochins back to the chick stall, worried sick no one was eating the pellets, but this older Cream shouldn't be starving to death. I have three food areas, to keep something like this from happening.
We called three local vets, and none knew where to get a necropsy done. I left a message with the avian pathology department at CSU, waiting for a call back.

That seems like the best bet ashdoes, the csu avaian pathology department part
400

This is the worst chick with food all over it, I tried to get it off by patting it with a damp paper towel, it's back at the feed bowl getting more coated.. agh!

If she had not eaten, then over eating can cause death. Hmmm, hope you get to the bottom of what they had/have!

Mine will not eat pellets, so have given up on them, when I did have them, I fermented them, the only way they would eat them.

Agree, CSU should be able to help.

Feather fixer only comes in pellets, but they're tiny. I'm going to fill out the submission form, and if this Cream dies, we'll be sending her up there.

I am downsizing some of my laying flock and breeding stock. I have two Gold Laced Barnevelder hens for sale, $25 each, prefer they go together.

Also, some Cochins for sale, please PM me for more info..........

Hi :)
Happy to let you all know we are allowed chickens in Frederick! (Frederick is close to Longmont). Out of the three towns (known as city's now because we are growing like crazy!) they only allow Frederick to have chickens. Both Docono and Firestone do not allow chickens.

They only let us have a few, but I think one or two over won't be an issue :) Unfortunately they don't allow roosters :( I really wanted a silkie rooster...have to make due with all girls.

Anyone out there sell silkies? I am looking for a splash, buff, and white silkie. Also I am looking for Bantam coachins. Let me know if you guys know of anyone around my area that sells silkies.

I can wait until next spring; there is no hurry :) I just wanted to start looking with time.
Thanks
Cynthia

I am pretty sure there are a few silkie sellers/breeders on the CO board. I'm sure you will find some nice birds. Congrats on being able to have birds!

Ashdoes. CSU will do a necropsy. I think it is $40. If you still have the bird I would encourage you to take it to CSU. If you end up going up to CSU think about taking some of your other birds and get a basic blood test done, for all the basic bird diseases. They pool the blood from up to 6 birds and test the blood. I think it cost $40, maybe less. I do this every other year just to make myself feel better. It keeps me from second guessing any ailments I might see. I know I don't have merecks, or any other avian diseases that can be tested for.
Like I say, it makes me feel better so I thought I would throw the suggestion out there.

Re the pellets. Mine won't eat pellets, they will starve if that is all they were given. The organic feed I used to get was ground grain and legumes, they just changed to pellets. I had to change brands. I wrote the company and said they lost a customer and I wished they made crumble or kept the ground feed.

Good luck, keep us posted.
