I still tend to my chickens. I feed fermented food so I still go out every morning to feed. But now I just don't have to feel bad if I sleep in a little later than usual. And if I'm out to dinner or something when it gets dark, I don't have to worry about them getting locked up. I always go count them every night though just so I feel better. ;)

Did you see the ad for muscovy? http://denver.craigslist.org/grd/4669225799.html

It's also great if we are going to be gone overnight. If I won't be back in time to feed them in the morning, I leave out enough dry food to get them through and make sure they have a large water thing. Then I don't have to find someone to watch them for that short period. I love it. I really missed it while it was down.

I'm going to go look at the muscovy on cl Sunday, I've been talking to the person for a few days about them. Since I'm 5 short of the 60 I had prepared for bird wise.. chicken math.

Chicks are not at the post office yet. I'm so nervous

I set up my new brooder box on the fireplace hearth to watch chick tv better!

What do you use for bear proofing Mtn Margie? We are moving to a place that is most definitely in the bear zone. We are starting out with the birds in the garage until the under cover coop is built. Not supposed to have chickens according to the HOA but we are going to try under the radar as we have plenty space to keep it quiet and hopefully no-one will notice. I am guessing that electrified fencing is a must. I have seen bears get through a pretty tough barn wall and fencing!

Hi there,

I used to live near Idaho Springs and we got a few bears a year. I never had a bear take the trouble to get after my ducks and chickens. After the birdseed or feed, yes. The birds, no.

We kept our feed in our barn in a trashcan with a lid and never had one try to break into our barn.

This is from when we were still building our house. I dropped a tree and hit the only possible valuable thing in the yard, my dish.

Foothillsco, bears are so unpredictable though and I would hate for them to get through and kill our birds. I had to chase a bear away from our coop at quite regular intervals, many years ago. I do think that if I had not been there to make a racket and chase it away it would have taken advantage. Thing is they are so darn destructive and if they once find a feast of juicy chickens it is that much harder to deter them after the fact. I would rather avoid an issue than take the chance ... we'll be living in an area where the bears regularly break through shed doors etc to get to the trash that is stored there. We live right near town in our present rental and have had bears tear up the wild bird feeders and eat the neighbors chickens. I can only think it will be worse where we are going.

Early Spring is the worst. If you get online (well of course you are because you are reading this) and look up bear warning sounds and get good at making those, you will REALLY make an impression on any bear that you start "talking" to. It spooks them real bad when people speak bear to them. My bears fear me and it is not because I look like a Tasmanian Devil coming at them.... although maybe they are just bored and want to see whats on Bear TV.

FINALLY! ! My 28-week-old FiFi (BCM) at last laid an egg! It's a beautiful slightly speckled dark reddish brown egg, and I can't tell you how thrilled I am. Now if only my 29-week-old EE and SS could get inspired to lay, I'd be a really happy camper.:)

The white bresse finally arrived at the post office and I got a call at 10:55 pm to pick them up fighting traffic both ways. The awesome people at the post office waited until 11:27 pm for me to pick up the chicks and they're home now.

They all look great except one, and it hasn't really drank much or eaten. Idk if it will survive through the weekend. Fingers crossed!

I lost one of my bresse this morning, it didn't drink when I put them in the brooder box when I got them home and was weak from the get go

I made some caramel with black lava salt and caramel covered apple slices, and a cocktail of bourbon with organic fresh pressed apple cider after burying the chick that didn't make it.

It seems like fall is truly here. I'm making beef stroganoff tomorrow and a pot of chili b/c we're working the Gypsy Jane festival this weekend, earthdog for the chicken swap (looking for muscovy and my bf wants to try to get rid of our 9 week old roosters) and just keeping busy with everything prepping for winter.

The bottom picture is my meat rabbit set up with my 2 does, Alice is my nzw 12 week old and Grace is my 6.5 month old nzw x silver fox doe. We're breeding her in 3 more weeks.

There's a couple of threads on byc about them, and another byc member dretd is in Colorado and does the decrowing surgery. I am having her do the surgery on my ayam cemani & white bresse roos soon and have a semi-quieted rooster from her.

Idk about futzing with something on my roosters everyday. The rest of my roos not used for breeding will become capons, which also stops crowing and aggressive behavior. Fwiw
