To Double Kindness,

The coop looks really good! It's amazing how much time they can take up. I've been wotking on mine, too. Have to take some pictures!

you got a barn? how bout a dog to stay with the stock and a cat as well.....i don't advocate my domestic animals being outdoors but a barn? heck yeah....unless of course the dog likes KFC :)

The two Bostons would never mess with the chickens, but they're also just about the size of a raccoon...so I'm not sure that would help any. The Great Dane, is a wuss..lol..honestly, he barks and backs up, just in the house. I can't imagine he'd want to fight a raccoon.
Hubby bought traps today. We're going to lock up all the chickens in the big stall, but leave the barn open and see what happens. I'm hoping our newly re-established coyote population helps with these issues. For some unknown reason, a neighbor thought it was a good idea to kill them all...when a fence would have been enough.

Ash- I hope things settle down for you

. There is just nothing else that I can say.....

We got 2 inches of wet snow last night and everything looked spectacular in the moonlight and sunrise all at the same time.

Ashdoes, Hang in there! These things happen. Have you considered putting in a trail cam, like those they sell for game? Might catch the perp in action! lol Hope you get them caught. You can call the Division of Wildlife and ask what to do with the animal. They came and picked up a skunk from my place years ago...... not sure if they still do this or not.

Such lovely eggs! Mine are slowly picking back up, two eggs from my older hens in one day! Yay!

Nice coop design! Hope everyone fits in it!!!

I have a few extra pullets for sale if anyone is interested, they are from my BV X AW crossing......... Please PM for more information, asking $10, they are at POL, a few have started laying.

Well, on top of everything, we now have something killing chickens in the barn. Geez! It's either a cat, or a raccoon. As much research as I'm doing, I can't find the regulations on trapping and killing raccoons. What are the rules in El Paso county?
So far it hasn't done too much damage, but sooner or later it'll decide killing everything in there is a good idea. We want to set the traps tonight, if possible.

I wad told by DOW in elpaso county that if something is harming your livestock that you had the right to protect them. I have caught quite a few around my place and have dispatched them with prejudice. Make sure the trap is strong enough for a racoon, as they are quite strong. Good luck.

Thank you! That was what I was thinking, but couldn't find exact wording for it. I know in our neighborhood people have had to take care of aggressive dogs, roaming on others properties, so I was thinking it would be the same for a wild animal.
We think its been too cold for it to travel the last two nights, because nothing out there has moved yet. But, we'll keep the trap set and the birds locked up till we catch something.

Can someone help me find a local breeder? I am in the Colorado Springs area and can go as far as Denver/Boulder. I am hoping to get some chicks (pullets) in the next few weeks. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Good Luck Ash, we have had a couple of bore's visit, caught them on our camera we have set up and one is huge. No wonder he broke the regular trap, twice and got out of course. Anyway, after seeing the size of the one that was walking around on the top of the enclosed run, we decided we needed to step up our trap game. So we ordered 6 of these types.....

700

Requires a special tool to set it, drop something like marshmallows down into it, the coon reaches in and grabs the marshmellows and the trap closes around his arm, doesn't hurt him, just keeps him there until you can get to it. No way to break the trap, I guess it stops them from chewing off their hand and they can't get out. We haven't caught anything yet, but the cold his coming in the next week few days.
