Colorado

I was right, my BA is the one who has started laying again. I found her in the nest box this morning. Hoping the rest follow suit shortly!
The girl with the swollen eye looks much worse this afternoon. I went to Big R and they didn't have the eye ointment that is recommended on here a lot. I do have some vetricyn spray but I didn't know if that would be ok for her eye. DD and her friend are washing her up right now because she's been wiping the drainage on her shoulder, and putting a warm compress on her eye. She still acts normal and no other chickens are displaying any symptoms of anything. I think we'll leave her inside for now so she'll get treatment multiple times a day.

Nice on the BA laying again, they hold the record of the most eggs laid in a year (I think)????

Good idea to keep her separate and cleaned up, I still think it is her eyelid, and with an antibiotic should heal fine, it looks very inflamed. Will you be near Colorado Springs soon, Pikes Peak Animal Supply (?) on Platte Ave carries everything one needs for farm and ranch animals! It is close to Powers Blvd.

My friend kerstiens is local and has bantam chocolate orpingtons. That is her byc member name.

My dr said I have a bacterial infection with this flu crud going around plus chickens.

Amazon just delivered a smashed french press.. which leads me to decide against getting shipped eggs. If they broke borosilicate glass, what would happen to eggs? I am upset over this broken coffee press.. I would be much more so if it were svart honas hatching eggs.

Dang it! I was just down there today. I'll keep putting stuff on it and hope she recovers. I think she's actually my friend's chickens, we have 2 lavender orpingtons on our side of the fence, one with the eye, one fine. My friend's daughter and DD both say the healthy one is the one I bought. So I don't really feel like spending a bunch of money on medicine for a chicken that isn't even mine. I'll take care of it the best I can though.

I got 3 french presses at thrift stores. All seemed to have never been used and I love them. We used 1 for camping and the others I do cold coffee with. One is 1 cup and the other is 2-3 cups worth.
I agree about not shipping eggs. It is so hard on them!

Hi Lacey and welcome to the Colorado thread. We will be hatching babies this spring from the following mating with our Buff Orphington roos - Easter Eggers, Barred Rock, Delaware, Dark Cornish, Rhode Island Reds and Welsummer's. We have a friendly flock, been raise since chicks together, the friendliest of our flock are the EE, BR and Delawares. Our roo's are friendly, they have been handled a lot and aren't agressive at all. Never had a single issue with the roosters, they have always been complete gentleman. Now they won't be purebred birds, just a barnyard mixed flock, you are more than welcome to buy some eggs or chicks from us. Our flock was immunized at the Hatchery against Marek's and have been healthy since day one.

I'll be sure to stay in touch with you about that! How big are your adult Orphingtons? I'm in the process of building my coop and run.
The reason I'd like to start with just a couple is because I want them first for pets, second for eggs. I plan to have a little ramp from my ground level laundry room window down into the room itself, which is also my craft room, so they can just hang out :) Still think I need three or four?

You can do 2 but they are much happier with a minimum of 4.

The first prescription, just happened to work for me. Maxalt XLT which I believe is the generic for Rizatriptan. The base goes with generic most times, unless the PCM states otherwise. It's a little wafer I let dissolve under my tongue, I hate it. It's sickly sweet, and tends to make me feel sick to my stomach till I can swish.
I agree diet plays a huge role with migraines. I try to stay away from most sugars, but it's not always easy. Ever find yourself eating something, and not realizing its a mistake till you're half through? Yeah, that happens to me a lot...and my husbands go to lovey treat is buying me Ben and Jerrys, he's learning though.
I think I have four Cochins Roos, two blues that are getting big quick. One black Cochin that we still can't agree on male or female. As long as everyone starts laying in January we'll be able to hatch out a big group, and really baby them through the worst ages for Mareks. We've decided to totally clean out the stalls, removing all my deep litter. I want to keep the babies separate as long as possible, I don't think its a coincidence that every time we tried to integrate them with the adults, three would develop symptoms and die within two weeks, usually faster. Stress seems to be the biggest trigger.

Tried Maxalt and didn't do much for me, Frova was nice because I could pre-dose myself if I knew I might get a migraine. For instance, I always get one the day before or day of my menstrial cycle, so typical would dose the night before I started. Helped a lot! Yes I have eaten plenty of things that I didn't have a clue had sugar in it until alreawdy through it. Gladly that I haven't typically been triggered from sugar. I still partake but try to not make it a regular endulgence.

Well our Buff Orphington roosters are big, here are some shots...I don't have a scale to weigh them so not sure how heavy they are. We don't have Buff Orph hens, only the roos. Not sure you caught that or not?

As far as the hens go the largest breed we have is the Welsummer, followed by the Delaware, a few larger Barred Rocks (we have smaller sized ones as well), then I would guess the Rhode Island Reds and Easter Eggers are about the same size (we have two very petite Easter Eggers, one medium size and two medium sized) and the runts of the flock all tend to be the Dark Cornish.

@trst - hope your friend's girl gets better soon.

Greetings @laceykins !

and welcome to the Colorado thread. I saw you asking about buff orp bantams... I ordered large fowl BOs from a hatchery that arrived the end of May. Though most of them are indeed full sized, I ended up with 3 that are bantam sized (

) or somewhere in between... they are featherweights. I am getting eggs from the BO's (in general) and am not sure if the 3 are laying or not... If not, they should start any time. They are very friendly and they run to the coop door to greet me and get picked up every time I go out there. They also jump into the nest boxes any time I open the (external) access door to check for eggs and try to come out with me.

If you also wanted to produce fertile eggs, my Bravo BO roo is very handsome, friendly and I would be willing to let him go as well with a couple of pullets. Anyway, let me know and if you're interested we can try to work out details. BTW, I agree with what others previous have said... they are flock animals and the minimum I'd consider is 3. (4 is better just in case something happens to one).

Funny funny...I got a Cream Legbar egg today..it was super big, so I'm guessing it's one of the older hens starting back up. Hope many more to follow. I'm pretty bummed I have to buy eggs for my angel food cake next week, their whites are so runny.

Look on craigslist for some local backyard eggs near you. I know there's still a couple people that have eggs to sell (they must supplement light). Worth the effort to get some eggs from a fellow chicken person than the store!
