Colorado

I dont find them harder to raise at all and they keep my grass miwed,to boot. I only had to mow twice last year. My three sleep in the same coop as the chickens. Or at least the run. I did make the geese their own sleeping structure, which they havent used. The chickens keep getting in there and kicking out all the hay that i put in there for nesting and bedding. I rather enjoy them following my family and i around. (Thats pretty sad coming from a hunter isnt it). Maybe im becoming a softie in my old age. Lol

That's why my dad wanted some - so they would mow down the backyard! He's a big hunter & was a trapper for most his life & he carries around my mom's dog Pebbles (a little chihuahua/Jack russell/beagle/wiener dog mix) *everywhere* he goes. He would take her out trapping in her bright pink coat & flower collar every day the last 2 years before he retired. I'm positive it just means hunters are total softies at heart. ;D

Got photo bombed by Athena this evening while waiting for Calypso to lay her egg. I can't believe I never had chickens growing up. They crack me up so much, even when they're roosters who are being total butts.

I wish I could raise some geese! I had to help CPW move flocks off golf courses one year & they were hilarious to watch interact with people. Before I had to take my pay cut, my dad was trying to get me to raise some geese (& pheasant & quail). Are they harder to care for than chickens, besides the imprinting deal?
Love the picture!!!

how cute!
I love my polish. So much personality! The rooster tho has been cocky... Started to attack our feet lately. And the silkie roo decided to sit in one of the nests and act all weird.

Adorable!!!!

We got about an inch of snow last night, reminds me of a March/April snow, very wet! I hope spring gets here early this year.

Ya, oh well, welcome to Colorado

If Spring gets here and doesn't bring some snow with her, we will be burning down again for sure, unless maybe we can get rains here and there to keep it wet....

Every year seems to be so different these days.....

That is a cute chicken!

Well the day has come. I need to send an ayam cemani and a white bresse to freezer camp. The crowing. The fighting. Yada yada yada.

They have been with held from food. My bf hid Boss from me this morning, so he stays for now. Until either the gff svart is old enough to breed, or I get a perfect male from the gff ayam cemani.

Having roosters is just not worth it unless he's good tempered, good to the girls and perfect specimen.

Wish me luck.

Oh and BTW another chick hatched yesterday in the janoel. My suspicion was right and I am losing my chicks in lockdown in the hovabator. Hmmm. Now how to fix this issue?

I named them Cheney (the dark suspected cockrel) Farrah, Dani and Flo. They are from my easter eggers with a salmon favorelle x wellsummer x light brahma roo over them, making them oe? Ee? 1 has feathered feet and legs, one has feathered legs, 2 do not. More to hatch.

I'm not quitting incubating totally yet. And I have 2 big brooder boxes in the barn, but I have mice problems, so I decided to keep these few chicks inside in a cardboard box for now. They have another place for me to move them that isn't cardboard, but with just now 4 chicks, it's not much mess. But they do hop in and out of the brooder box at will with the brinsea heater vs the red heat lamp. I'm incredibly impressed with it, they only make noise if they get lost, or the 2 big chicks jump out and leave Dani behind. She doesn't like that. Lol

If you need to kill mice in the barn, but can't just set traps out, use the traps in a box. I grab whatever boxes I have, shoe box or bigger, cut little hole in them that the mice can get in and set the traps inside with PB or cheese. This way you keep killing them, but don't chance a chicken losing it's face. I place boxes all over the barn, and always have mice caught in the morning.

Glad you are not giving up on incubating, experience is the only way to learn, as so many variables, temp, humidity, turning etc. You will get there, it may take many hatch's, but eventually you will have success! Hmmm, lockdown trouble..... you can read up on air cells and how much moisture they "should" lose over the incubation, helps to mark them with a pencil when you candle.

I have been fortunate enough to not have any egg laying issues (other than lack of supply) with my hens. My one 5 year old EE recently started back laying. Her first few eggs were perfect. The past 2 have been completely smeared with poop. A little bit doesn't bother me but completely encased is causing me some concern. No change in feed. I have cleaned out some old winter squash and pumpkin but she doesn't eat any more than the rest. Any ideas? I'll give them a few days of Diamond V (prebiotic) just because it can't hurt. No change in her demeanor.
