It was finally nice enough for me to set up a fenced off area in the main flock's pen for the M&M Twins. That went a little more intensely than the previous 2 times the chicks were next to their parents. I'm pretty sure it's because they were IN Odysseus's pen. Father & son had some animated exchanges where they mimicked each other's movements and clucked at each other. No fighting through the fence, though, so I was thankful for that. The 2 chicks are almost the same size as Odysseus, as far as height goes. They're still much lighter than he is. The only hen that was interested in checking them out was Penelope & that's because she's always there to step in between Odysseus and whatever he's having beef with (usually my rubber boots).
After awhile, I brought them back up to the garage pen because I was starting to have a lot of pain in my ankles from being on my feet all day. The month old chicks were in there and that didn't go as well as I had hoped it would. Memnoch gave them all a decent thumping, especially the tiny d'Anvers chick. I'm hoping they'll eventually be able to commingle without me watching them because everyone is getting a little too big and a little too ripe to stay in their brooders for much longer. The month old chicks still aren't fully feathered, but it would be nice to start getting them used to being outside and with the twins. That little d'Uccle sure wasn't going to let Memnoch peck at the d'Anvers unanswered. She went right up to him and gave him a good peck in the face before running away.
These 2 crack me up. They've really helped me manage this depression I've been in all month due to my job and my brain injury. All the animals have. It's good to have a routine and something to take care of to make sure I don't stay in bed and marathon TV shows on Hulu and Netflix all day. I'm not looking forward to more rain, though. I just got the pen cleaned out and unflooded! I know the adult flock is anxious to not be in the barn during the rain. Thankfully, the coop is almost done (and has remained dry inside through the deluge!) and they won't have to be moved back and forth from the barn anymore. Although, doing that has taught the flock to just follow me from the barn to their pen instead of having to carry them. Except Odysseus. He still insists on riding on my shoulder.
I hope everyone with that nasty cold is feeling better. I've still got that cough that makes my eyes see stars, but it is slowly going away.
