DK,
Man that sux that he passed like that. I am hoping that he was not poisoned too. Some people can be purely vile. What the heck is there to complain about with ducks anyway. They are way quieter than chickens, they just want to be ducks not cause a bunch of hassle. When I had mine the drakes never even really fought over the ladies either.
I know my current hens can be very loud. One sounds like a goose and I think the three babies of that breed are starting to sound like her.
Sure would be nice if the complaining person would up and move on.

Ash,
I think I saw that advertised on the news a while back even. They were doing it as a bit on the backyard chicken craze and start up businesses. I saw it and thought the same thing.
I did see an ad on Craigs a while back too that was titled "Why rent a chicken when you can buy one" In the ad they went on about how heartbroken the kids were when they had to give them back at the end of the contract.
Does not seem like a good idea to me either.

Well I got the butterfly garden plants bought and did not even have them in the ground when I saw a new bird in the yard. I looked it up and it was a blackheaded grosbeak. Guess what they eat....... yup butterflies............GREAAAAAAATTTTT I invited a killer into the yard. *sigh* So much for butterflies flitting about being all pretty. I am picturing a mid air dogfight guns blazing and butterflies falling. Maybe DH wont notice if I pull up all the flowers and plant onions.

DK - holy smokes, I'm so sorry about Elvis! I really hope you don't live next to someone that would do that to an animal. However, if it turns out to be a poisoning, good reason to call the cops to investigate.

@Ashdoes good point about AI and the chicken rentals. I wonder what they would say if you called and asked them about those concerns. Then report back ;)

So yesterday was the beginning of the end of our adult flock. I had one buyer pick up 5 birds last night, 3 Cornish and the RIR. I was shocked the Cornish sold so fast, I had a lot of interest in them. I did have a cry after the guy left with the birds as it is hard to get rid of them after raising them. Anyway, I was contacted by a free range egg chicken business in Berthoud who is interested in buying the rest of the flock. I am hoping to set that up for them to be picked up tomorrow. We will be taking 6 layers with us and of course the babies from hatch. Hard to decide who to take, so we are taking two EE, broody Cornish, BR, Left Eye (the blind in one eye Delaware) and Saffron one of our Welsummer's.

Our lone Cornish who is broody is on day 17 and has 8 eggs still. We should be having chicks soon! :fl those chicks will be sold or given away as well.

Oh and yesterday was the babies first full day in the run and I wanted to see what they would do at dusk. Would they know how or would they go to their small coop. I put a small solar light in the coop, I had read that on another thread. To train them, put a light in the coop so the stragglers can find their way.

Worked like a charm, by 8:15 everyone was in the coop. It was also their first night without a heat pad in their brooder. They just turned 5 weeks and almost everyone is fully feathered.

I've made plans to process my SS, but I would like to shake things up a bit more. So my younger EE is going to have to be re-homed. She's a very good layer - averages 5 green eggs a week; she's worth keeping, but not with my bantam chocolate Orpington.

Is anyone interested in my Peggy Sue?

Hello everyone! My name is Joe and my wife's name is Danell. We live iN Pueblo West. We are new at the chicken and duck thing but were giving it a try. We currently have 6 Muscovy ducklings about 3 weeks old, 4 Indian Runners about 2 weeks old, and a 4 week old rooster. We'll be getting more chickens once our area is set up this weekend.

Anyone aware of the local ordinance for hens in Mead?

I've been searching for a while now, and can only find the ordinance listed on the official site detailing the pilot program they launched in 2010 (only issued 30 permits during that program). The most recent mention of hens on the site is from a meeting agenda from late April of this year, but it just mentions that the ordinance would be updated. Couldn't find any info regarding the results of that meeting.

I found this on their official website.

It looks like only 4 hens with a permit and requirements on size of coop/run. The above link has the actual ordinance from 2012. I did not find a more recent one.

In this one the only reference to chickens is about people with permits needing to update their contact information.

There were a couple older ones that were just the agendas from board meetings that had a very brief mention of backyard chicken keeping and look to be from when they were first deciding if hens could be kept.

I went back and looked for the agenda you mention and yes it looks like there is some sort of change happening with a giant maybe they are changing it maybe not. I looked for the ordinance the numbers in the agenda should lead to but they only lead back to the agenda.

May need to call them to get clarification on the changes if any that the 2014 agenda leads one to believe are in the works.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Babs, I appreciate it. I should have linked to the initial ordinance info I found, as it looks to be the same as what you posted ( http://www.townofmead.org/ArchiveCenter/ViewFile/Item/1363 ). I may be reading the document incorrectly, but it looks like this was detailing the pilot program that involved a max of 30 permits that would be issued. Looks like the program's length was set to end on Dec 31, 2012, while the actual document was signed and dated in 2010.

It does reference a trial period in one section. I had misread it perhaps in my initial reading. May end up needing to call them if someone else does not have more info for you here. I looked on the BYC chicken laws and ordinances thread and did not find Mead listed.
